Platinum End (Hepburn: Purachina Endo) is a Japanese manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. The manga is published by Shūeisha in the monthly magazine Jump SQ from November 2015 to January 2021. In Italy it was distributed by Planet Manga. . The series follows Mirai Kakehashi, a student who attempts suicide but is saved by his guardian angel, Nasse, who not only has sworn to protect him but gives him special powers as he is also one of 13 candidates chosen by different angels to take on the role of God, who will retire in 999 days. Platinum End is licensed by Viz Media in North America. An adaptation of the anime television series by Signal.MD will premiere in October 2021.

History

Mirai Kakehashi is a young student fed up with a life of abuse by his uncle and aunt, who raised him after his parents died, but he is saved by a guardian angel named Nasse, after attempting to commit suicide. After learning from Nasse that his adoptive parents were responsible for the deaths of his father and mother, Mirai uses the powers she has bestowed on him to confront them and bring justice. However, Mirai's trials have only just begun, when Nasse informs him that God will retire in 999 days and thirteen candidates to replace him have been selected, including Mirai himself. To make matters worse, not only cannot Mirai refuse to enter the contest to decide the next God, but among the other candidates are those capable of anything to win, including killing all the Contestants as soon as possible.

Characters

Mirai Kakehashi

He was adopted by his abusive uncle and aunt after his family was killed in a car accident. The abuse he suffered led him to attempt suicide, throwing himself from a tower block, but he is saved by his guardian angel Nasse. Using arrows he discovers that his uncle and aunt have killed his family, accidentally kills his aunt and then forces his uncle to turn himself in. Upon learning of Metropoliman's plans, Mirai joins forces with Saki and Nanato to stop him, not only to protect himself, but to prevent him from becoming God too.

Pots

The angel of Mirai. All angels bestow special abilities on their hosts and based on their rank, the abilities they bestow vary. Nasse is a special rank angel, who grants Mirai all three angelic abilities, including wings that give Mirai the ability to fly, a white arrow that allows the user to instantly kill anyone he hits, and a red arrow that allows the user to make anyone fall in love with them for 33 days. His main desire is to make Mirai happy. Despite having a cute face, he has a habit of making some cruel remarks.

Saki Hanakago

Saki is Mirai's classmate, her love interest and, coincidentally, also a candidate for God. Once she learns he has no intention of killing her, Saki teams up with Mirai to face Metropoliman. Saki and Mirai were once childhood friends, but after her parents died, Mirai became the target of her classmates' bullying and Saki did nothing to stop them. He witnessed Mirai's suicide attempt at the beginning of the series and, through blame, he also did so by trying to drown herself in the sea, leading her to meet Revel and become a candidate for God.

Revel

Saki's angel. He is quite calculating and manipulative, a trait that is considered by Nasse to be the reason why he was relegated as a second rank angel, therefore only capable of bestowing the red arrow on Saki. Once he decides to make himself more useful, Revel decides to study the knowledge of the skies in order to increase his rank and grant wings to Saki, but he fails. However, when Revel sheds his tears because he no longer feels useful to Saki, God promotes him to the top and bestows on him the title of "Angel of emotion", as no angel has ever shed tears for a human before. This rank increase gives him the ability to bestow wings on Saki.

Kanade Uryu

The main antagonist of the series who intends to become God by all means necessary, including killing all other candidates. He is the grandson of the principal of the prestigious Joso Academy and wishes to become God to bring his dead sister back to life. He had so far killed four other candidates using the alias "Metropoliman" and claimed their wings and arrows, becoming even more dangerous when he realized that different arrows can be combined to increase their range and that the arrows and wings he has obtained can be given to other individuals to carry out his orders.

Tonma Rodríguez

A divine candidate who is a failed comedian. He uses his red arrows to make women fall in love with him so he can have sex with them. He is the first candidate for God to be killed, having been assassinated by Kanade as Metropoliman.

Shogo Hatakeyama

Two divine candidates disguising themselves as different versions of Metropoliman when Kanada asks divine candidates to attend a meeting at a baseball stadium. They are friends who want to help each other after they hurt their exams, and are saved from suicide by their guardian angels. However, the rally is a trap and both are killed by the real Metropoliman.

Chiyo Nakayama

Chiyo is the youngest candidate for God. She is a girl who was bullied at school. Attend the meeting and ask Metropoliman for help. Kanade first hits her with a red arrow, but then uses her as a hostage saying he will kill her if no other candidate for God reveals himself. Like no one, Kanade kills Chiyo.

Nanato Mukaido
Nanato is a God candidate who works as a product planner for a clothing company. Suffering from terminal cancer, he first uses his red arrows to secure enough money for his family after his death, then hires private investigators to find more candidates for God. He decides to ally with Mirai and Saki to prevent Kanade. you become God, to the point of obtaining firearms from the JSDF to have a better chance of killing him. Mirai agrees on the grounds that Nanato continues her treatment.

Hajime Sokotani
Born poor and ugly, Hajime has always been shunned by others until his mother commits suicide and Balta appears to become his angel. Using Balta's powers, Hajime manages to get money and a beautiful new face with plastic surgery, but is still unable to attract a girl due to her poor communication skills. He develops an obsession with Kanade and offers to become her subordinate, which he accepts, but only in exchange for capturing another God Candidate. He then manages to discover Nanato's identity and kidnaps his wife and daughter to lure him into a trap. He manages to capture both Nanato and Mirai, but while waiting for an opportunity to kill them, he ends up hit by Saki's red arrow.
