Ryo, a boy against an empire (original title: 未来警察ウラシマン Mirai Keisatsu Urashiman lit: "Urashiman the policeman of the future") is a Japanese animated series (anime) and manga written by Hirohisa Soda, illustrated by Noboru Akashi and Haruka Inui and was published by Akita Shoten on Weekly Shonen Champion. The anime television series produced by Tatsunoko Productions aired from January 9 to December 24, 1983 on Fuji TV. It was also broadcast in Germany and Sweden as Rock 'n Cop, in Finland as Rocki-kytta, in France as Superdurand (more or less, "Super Jones" or "Super Smith"), and in Italy as Ryo, a boy against an empire from Italy 1 since 1996.

Saban Entertainment dubbed it Rock 'n Cop, but this dub never came out in the US. The Saban version was however used as the basis for the German, Swedish and Finnish versions. A film version was in the works, but it was also abandoned. The anime is licensed in North America by Sentai Filmworks.

History

The story tells of a young man and his cat who are chased by police during a particularly stormy night in a 1983 city. The young man suddenly drives his car right in the middle of a cyclone and is caught in a space / time anomaly. As a result, they end in the year 2050.

Suffering from complete memory loss, he soon discovers that he is being pursued by army-like forces of Necrime, a major criminal organization led by Ludovich. Taking the name of Ryū Urashima, the young man joins the police force and fights against Necrime. He is joined in the fight by Sophia, a carefree former nun, and Claude, an official colleague. The unit is managed by Inspector Gondo Toru. He is also joined by his cat, Myaa, who has made time travel with him and is one of the few ties to his past that he remembers.
