Sharky & George, the 1990 animated series
Sharky & George (original title Sharky and Georges) is an animated series for children, produced by the animation studios CinéGroupe and Label 35 between 1990 and 1992. The series consisted of fifty-two 25-minute episodes, including two 12-minute editions that sometimes aired separately. The series was subsequently translated into English and broadcast in the United Kingdom on Channel 4 from 1991 to 1998. In Italy it was broadcast on Rai 1, Rai 2, Telegenova and Telepace and in San Marino on San Marino RTV.
History
The story of Sharky & George is set in the underwater city of Seacago, populated by various types of fish. The protagonists are two private detectives who run their own agency. Sharky, the largest fish, is a rather lazy pink shark with a huge nose and wears a Humphrey Bogart-style fedora hat. George, the smallest fish, is blue with a yellow face and younger than Sharky. Together, the two friends fight the crazy plans to conquer the many criminals and gangs who are terrorizing Seacago, including Doctor Medusa (Dr. Jelly in the English versions; mad scientist and self-proclaimed master of the world) and Red Lobster (Colonel Klaw in the versions. British; German commander of Black Crab's army).
Production
It has been translated into English and aired on Channel 4, Sky Channel, The Children's Channel and Cartoon Network in the UK. Sharky & George was also broadcast in Ireland on RTÉ Two, in France on Toon Disney, in Yugoslavia on RTV Politika, in Italy on Rai Uno, Rai Due and Telepace, in San Marino on San Marino RTV, in Hungary on Magyar Televízió, in Poland on TVP 1 (dubbed), in Singapore on Channel 5 and in Spain on TVE. It was translated into Spanish from America and shown on RTP (currently called TV Perú) in Peru, Megavisión (currently called Mega) in Chile and also shown in other Latin American countries. In Canada, it was broadcast on Canal Famille and on YTV and Showcase translated into English.
The show also aired on SABC in South Africa. The show was broadcast in Afrikaans on television along with an English simulcast on the radio. The English dub of the show also aired in South Africa, where it aired on M-Net as part of their kid's block KT.V. and later on Bop TV in 2001 aired in the Teeny Bop children's block.
