Space Fantasia 2001 Night, the 1987 manga and anime

2001 Nights (2001 夜 物語, Nisen'ichi Ya Monogatari) is a science fiction manga series written and illustrated by Yukinobu Hoshino and originally serialized in Futabasha's Monthly Super Action starting in June 1984. It was then collected in three bound volumes by Futabasha , released between August 18, 1985 and October 24, 1986. The series was licensed for an English language version by Viz Media and released in North America beginning in 1990. 2001 Nights is largely inspired by classic hard science fiction , with many visual tributes to previous novels and contains many tributes to earlier science fiction films and novels. The title is a hybrid of 2001: Odissea nello spazio e One thousand and one nights Arab.

2001 Nights was adapted into an original video animation (OVA) episode with the name Space Fantasy 2001 Nights by TMS Entertainment and released on VHS on June 21, 1987. It has not been licensed in English, although versions with English subtitles can be found.

Stories

The stories that make up the complete manga are arranged in chronological order, with two exceptions. According to the technology used, night 14 ("Elliptical Orbit") appears to belong somewhere between nights 6 and 7 (after the invention of suspended animation and interstellar travel, but before the discovery of Lucifer). The second, Night 6 ("Discovery") is mentioned in Night 4 ("Posterity"), which occurs 20 years after the launch of the Discovery probe.

Review

In reviewing the manga, Mark Aragon praised Hoshino's ability to strike a balance between science and fantasy elements in his stories, noting the work of Lucifer Rising. Harry Knowles of Ain't It Cool News praised the work for its performance, but surpasses its inspiration A Thousand and One Nights and 2001: A Space Odyssey, noting, “Remember the classics and develop your science fiction pretty well on its own. it is not diminished by comparisons ".

Anime-focus.com reviewed the TO OVA and offered a mixed review of the work. While praising the graphics and special effects, he focused on the emotionless English dub Funimation, made even worse by the lifeless characters and lack of attachment to the stories. To conclude with: “This should have been a jewel, but the flaws are too big to make it the masterpiece it could have been”. Charles Packer, found the same flaws in his review of him, “While the record may sound spectacular, it's hard to get over the fact that the stories are too much cliched.
