Popeye and Son - The 1987 animated series

Popeye and Sonin the American original is an American animated series based on Popeye(Popeye), the famous comic and cartoon character from author EC Segar and published by King Features Syndicate. The series was produced by Hanna & Barbera for a total of 26 episodes and broadcast for the first time on CBS from 12 September to 5 December 1987. In Italy the series was broadcast on 10 September 1992 on Italia 1

The Italian theme song of the series, What a Popeye dad!, written by Alessandra Valeri Manera and Ninni Carucci, is sung by Cristina D'Avena.

History

Popeye and son and his longtime girlfriend, Olivia (Olive Oyl), are married and have a son named Junior, who inherited Popeye's ability to gain superhuman strength by eating spinach; however, Junior hates the taste of spinach, preferring burgers, like Poldo (Wimpy), much to his father's chagrin, although he still eats spinach in case of a problem. Popeye's longtime rival Brutus (Bluto) also has a wife and son named Tank. As in the old days, Popeye and Brutus harbor an intense hatred of each other, but not their children Junior and Tank.

Production

Jointly produced by Hanna-Barbera and King Features subsidiary King Features Entertainment, the series aired for a thirteen-episode season on CBS. It is the sequel to The All New Popeye Hour. Maurice LaMarche portrayed the voice of Popeye in this series (succeeding Jack Mercer in that role), while much of The All New Popeye Hour cast reprized their respective roles with the exception of Daws Butler. However, Nancy Cartwright voiced Woody in the series in which she was trained by Butler. It is also the first Popeye cartoon series produced since Mercer's death in 1984. After its programming on CBS, this series re-aired on the USA Network in the 1989-90 season and on The Family Channel from September 1994 to December. 1995.
