History

It's the 20s and Gotham is a very Lovecraftian place. While goofing around doing who-knows-what, Batman accidentally released an evil being called the Lurker onto the Threshold. And now the Lurker is inviting more villains to rush to Gotham – in this story, this is how Ra's Al Ghul meets the Dark Knight.

Supernatural creatures are a bit above Batman's workload (although he is Batman and can defeat anyone if he really wanted to). He's going to need allies… and in this story, he has Robin, Oracle, Jason Blood (and by extension his demonic alter ego Etrigan). Kai Li Cain and someone calling himself Grendon. It's actually Mr. Freeze! I hope you don't stab Bats in the back with a popsicle.

David Giuntoli (Grimm) is voicing Batman this time, a job he has already done once in DTV 2020 Batman: Soul of the Dragon. Other cast members include Jason Marsden as Dick Grayson, Gideon Adlon as Oracle, Tati Gabrielle as Kai Li, Navid Negahban as Ra's, and David Dastmalchian as Freeze.

Other than that, we have no idea what happens next, if anything. WB's DC division is undergoing a massive restructuring to unify all projects within one universe, and if that affects the long-running DTV film division, we may not have many features left. It's now or never to do Knight, boys.

Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham will be released on disc and digital in Spring 2023.

The comic

Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham is a three-issue comic book miniseries published from November 2000 to January 2001 under DC Comics' Elseworlds imprint. Written by Mike Mignola and Richard Pace and illustrated by Troy Nixey (pencils) and Dennis Janke (inks), with Mignola providing the covers, the story deals with an alternate Batman in the 20s battling mystical and supernatural forces that are taking storm Gotham after accidentally awakening the being known as the Lurker on the Threshold.

Mignola's third work on the character, the story is filled with many Lovecraft-inspired interpretations of both the Dark Knight's friends and foes, including Green Arrow, Two-Face, Ra's al Ghul, and so on. Also, the title of the story is an allusion to Lovecraft's 'The Doom That Came to Sarnath'. In 2015, the story was finally collected into a complete volume by DC and released as a trade paperback.
