The Game Awards presents the new Super Mario Bros
super mario bros movie

We got quite a few surprises at this year's Game Awards, from Hades II to Armored Core VI. But the most unpredictable element of the night was Nintendo, because… nobody can EVER predict what Nintendo will do.

The company's presence at this year's TGA was light, showcasing just two exclusive titles, Fire Emblem Engage and a Bayonetta spin-off set to launch in March. The biggest thing they did was show 90 uninterrupted seconds from the Super Mario Bros movie. And here they are.

There's a lot packed into just a minute and a half: This scene is filled with background sight gags that a theater-goer wouldn't be able to stop and see (so thanks for the early release; now we can get them). Toads are shown using blocks of coins as ATMs. Mario walks past a toad carrying a Cheep Cheep in a plastic bag, as if it just came out of a pet store. The Crazy Cap shop from Super Mario Odyssey can be seen in the background. An "antique" store contains various 8- and 16-bit items, as well as an NES trolley, which a customer is told "works great, you just have to blow into it".

It's Mario's very first time here, so the things we're used to seeing him pull off with ease are definitely traumatizing for him. It's weird that blocks can just float in mid-air. And his first pipe trip does NOT go well.

Super Mario Bros Movie Stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Anya Taylor Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike. It will arrive on April 7, 2023.

The second trailer

The second trailer for the Super Mario Bros movie! Running for two minutes, it packs a lot more information than the previous trailer. It seems that in this story Mario will meet Donkey Kong for the first time in some kind of tournament, with Cranky as emperor. Interesting.

There are a surprising number of things taken DIRECTLY from the games in this trailer. Peach receives a fire flower. while Mario at one point manages to wear the Tanooki suit. There's also an attempt to translate one of the classic Super Mario Bros. levels into 3D, and not like in Mario 3D World, but as straightforward as a bunch of platform blocks floating in mid-air, all over the place.

Also, for some reason on the story we still don't have clarity, they have the excuse to jump on karts and race along Rainbow Road. Hopefully these things make sense and aren't included just for the fun of it.

Mario also seems to have been injured a lot. The baby bump in giant mushrooms in the previous trailer was just the beginning. A Bullet Bill hits his back and makes him scream at 100mph. To Cheep Cheep — well, we'd better leave it as a surprise, since it's our favorite part of the trailer.

It's already been said that Chris Pratt sounds nothing like Mario, but it also doesn't seem like the rest of the cast is trying to get close. When Peach speaks, you hear Beth Harmon the chess master, not the familiar princess. Luigi finally has a talking clip and he sure looks like nothing more than the guy from Always Sunny. We assume that this doesn't matter to Nintendo, that he could have ordered it changed with a wave of his hand. The rumors are fine but we miss Martinet (who is here somewhere, but in a small part yet to be revealed).
