Netflix has produced another European animated film for worldwide streaming, titled dragon rider (The Dragon Knight) by Germany's Constantin Film, RISE FX South Studios (Munich) and Belgium's Cyborn which will be released on the streaming platform as Firedrake the silver dragon. The new Netflix title will be released in multiple territories, including the US and UK, on September 10th.
Based on the book Il Dragon knight by Cornelia Funke (Inkheart, Igraine the brave), the 3D CGI film follows the adventures of a young silver dragon named Firedrake and his companions - a hairy mountain spirit named Sorrell and a young orphan named Ben - in their fantastic quest to find the “Rim of Heaven ”, where dragons are free to live in safety, away from man.
The English-language voice cast includes Freddie Highmore (Ben), Felicity Jones (Sorrell), Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Firedrake), Nonso Anzozie (Mighty Djinn) and Patrick Stewart (Nettlebrand).
Directed by award-winning animator Tomer Eshed, production on the film began in 2017. Firedrake the silver dragon received a brief theatrical release in 2020, but this run was hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Constantin Films is best known to international audiences for producing VFX special effects, including film series of resident evil and more recently Monster Hunter. RISE VFX, based in Berlin, produced the animated film Richard - Mission Africa (Richard the Stork) and contributed visual effects to MCU titles, including Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel e Black Panther as well as a number of Netflix projects, including Stranger Things e Fear street - the studio recently announced that it is launching a dedicated animation studio in Munich. Cyborn was a co-producer on the 2018 animated film ploey.
