The Knights of the Zodiac - The goddess of discord (劇場版 - 聖 闘 士 星矢 Saint Seiya Gekijoban), renamed Saint Seiya: Evil Goddess Eris (聖 闘 士 星矢 邪神 エ リ ス, Seinto Seiya: Jashin Erisu) in its home video version, is the first of a series of anime films produced by Toei Animation based on the manga The knights of the Zodiac (Saint Seiya) by Masami Kurumada. The film premiered on July 18, 1987 at the Toei Manga Matsuri film festival, where it was shown as part of a quadruple film alongside Dragon Ball: The Sleeping Princess in the Devil's Castle and film versions of Hikari Sentai Maskman and Choujinki. Metalder.

History

The goddess Discord returns to Earth inside a golden apple and takes possession of the body of Daisy, a young girl aide to Lamia at St. Charles College. The return of the goddess leads to the rebirth of her temple, which stands on a mountain near New Luxor. Eris also brings five Shadow Knights back to life in her service: Serian of Orion, Ian of the Shield, Lesia of dark Sagitta, Relta of the Southern Cross and Orpheus of the Lyre. The Goddess of Discord's goal is to overwhelm Athena and so she kidnaps Lady Isabel on a morning ride and takes her to her temple, tying her to the altar of sacrifice and starting to absorb her life energy in order to complete the his resurrection. Since Lady Isabel is convinced that her Knights will come to save her, Eris challenges them by inviting them to rush to her temple.

Pegasus, Sirio, Cristal and Andromeda reach the battle site and set off separately towards the altar of sacrifice, but on their way the Knights of Athena are intercepted by the Shadow Knights. Pegasus meets Lesia, who he manages to defeat albeit being wounded by a poisoned arrow. Cristal clashes with Relta, but the fight is interrupted by the arrival of Eris, who hits both the Knight of the Southern Cross and the Knight of the Swan with her scepter. Sirio instead wages a battle with Ian, strong with a very powerful shield at first sight indestructible; in the end the Dragon Knight manages to defeat the enemy, while remaining exhausted after the battle. Meanwhile Andromeda engages in a battle with Orpheus, who seems to have the upper hand, but in the most critical moment for the Andromeda Knight, Phoenix comes to his aid. It is the Knight of the Phoenix who finally defeats the opponent with his Phoenix Wings.

It's up to Pegasus and Phoenix to battle Serian, the last remaining Shadow Knight and the most powerful. The two Knights, however, fail to defeat the enemy and the triumph of Eris, meanwhile resurrected in her divine body, seems increasingly certain. However, the Knight of Pegasus manages to find the strength to react, supported by the voices of his friends, and prepares for the final battle wearing the golden armor of Sagittarius, which only the fairest of the Knights can wear. Defeated Serian, Pegasus fires the Golden Arrow, which pierces Eris and destroys the golden apple that was meanwhile stealing vital energy from Lady Isabel. The goddess of discord decays and her temple collapses, but all the Knights of the zodiac, Athena and Daisy, freed from the influence of the evil goddess, are saved.

After capturing Saori Kido (Athena), she places a golden apple in front of Saori's chest to drain her power and life force to the point where Eris would no longer need her body. Daisy. He then proceeds with his plan to take over the world. It was foretold that if Athena died, all saints who died with pain in their hearts would be resurrected to bring about the destruction of the Earth.

Daisy (Eri Aizawa) (相 沢 絵 梨 衣)
Voiced by: Mayumi Sho
Daisy she is a volunteer at the Star Children Academy where Seiya, her sister Seika and Miho grew up. Her desire for a shooting star was stolen by Eris. The goddess took control of the body of Daisy until Eris was fully revived back to this world. Daisy and Hyōga felt a close bond when they first met.

Serian of Orion (オ リ オ ン 星座 の ジ ャ ガ ー Orion no Jager?Jagger of Orion in the second dubbing)
Voiced by: Yu Mizushima
He is said to be one of the most powerful Silver Knights who served Athena with honor. After being killed, he harbored a grudge for being forgotten and for the loneliness that comes from being dead. He did not hesitate to accept Eris's offer and was soon reanimated with a new body to fight for the destruction of the world. When he confronted Phoenix Ikki, he discovered that his enemy's strength was almost equal to his. When Ikki explained the meaning of the friendship that the present saints had, Jäger hesitated, but still continued to fight Ikki. Jäger was interrupted when Pegasus Seiya obtained the Sagittarius Gold Cloth and, after blocking his strongest attack from Seiya, was defeated. With his last words of him, he recognized Seiya and the others as true Saints.

Relta of the Southern Cross (南十字 星座 の ク ラ イ ス ト Crux no ChristChrist of Crux Australis in the second dubbing)
Voiced by: Ryuusei Nakao
Relta he died some time before Athena was kidnapped. Hyōga recognizes him as the Saint of the Southern Cross, since he himself is that of the Northern Cross. Feeling restless and haunted by his death as he lay in the grave, Relta he put aside his title of Saint and joined with Eris, who revived him with a new body. When he gets an edge over Cygnus Hyōga, Relta he is betrayed by Eris, who sees this as a good opportunity. Throw a spear into the back of Relta, which pierces his heart, killing him and injuring Hyōga at the same time.

Lesia of dark Sagitta (矢 星座 の 魔 矢 Sagitta no Maya?Mayan of Sagitta in the second dubbing)
Voiced by: Michitaka Kobayashi
Another Saint revived by Eris in a new body. His personality is similar to Pegasus Seiya's, but lesia he would fight to the death if it meant winning. He proves it when he confronts Seiya, to speak first and then attack with all his might. He can't compete with Seiya, but one of the arrows from his Hunting Arrow Express attack breaks through Seiya's defenses. Seiya removes the arrow with ease and tries to persuade lesia to tell him where Saori is, but he leaves when lesia does not answer. lesia he says in his last breath that the arrow is actually poisonous and it only takes one hit to remove the five senses.

Ian of the Shield (盾 星座 の ヤ ン Scutum no Yan?, called in the second dub Yan of Scutum)
Voiced by Keiichi Nanba
Ian he is a saint who apparently died in vain; this may have been caused by her outspoken, action-ready personality. Because he was restless in the tomb, he gladly accepted Eris's offer, and was soon revived and given a new body. He faced Dragon Shiryū. Since the Scutum Cloth has a stronger shield than the Dragon Cloth, he apparently defeated Shiryū within a minute, but, underestimating the Dragon Saint's power, he was soon defeated when Shiryū unleashed all of his Cosmos in a single attack.

Orpheus of the Lyre (琴 座 の オ ル フ ェ ウ ス Lyra no Orpheus, Called Orfeus of Lyra in the second dubbing)
Voiced by: Yuji Mitsuya
The same legendary mythical character, as expressed by Andromeda Shun. After his failure to bring Eurydice back, he died with regrets. This led to him willingly accepting Eris's offer and being resuscitated into a new body. While facing Shun, Orpheus appeared to be a calm and subtle person, but as the fight progressed, he showed the darker side of him. After trapping and nearly killing Shun with his Stringer Requiem attack, Orpheus was interrupted by the arrival of Phoenix Ikki. Ikki attacked with his Hō'ō Genmaken, but since Orpheus had already suffered from hell, he easily repulsed the attack. Wasting no time, Orpheus attacked again with his Stringer Requiem, but this time Ikki unleashed his Hōyoku Tenshō attack and Orpheus was killed.

Production

With the success of the manga in Japan The knights of the Zodiac (Saint Seiya) by Masami Kurumada and its anime adaptation, Toei has planned a feature film where Kurumada, participated in the production. In three months, he created and designed the five new Saints that appeared in the film, whose appearances were based on his sketches of him, as seen in an article published in Weekly Shōnen Jump. The name of the Ghost Saint Scutum Jan constellation was originally "Shield", but has been changed to the Japanese form of the Scutum constellation: Tateza. In Japan, the film was called Saint Seiya: The Movie, but in some countries it received the name “The Legend of the Golden Apple”, or another similar title. The author of the series, Masami Kurumada, suggested the name “Jashin Eris” for its DVD release. The five Ghost Saints alive were Silver Knights, which was confirmed with a question mark in the booklet of the film Saint Seiya: The Heaven Chapter ~ Overture ~.

The soundtrack was composed by Seiji Yokoyama and released on the Saint Seiya Original Soundtrack II CD.

In 2011, the film was adapted into a musical for Japanese audiences, which premiered on May 5, 2011. The musical was released on DVD on November 21, 2011, as was its soundtrack on October 19, 2011.

Home video editions

In Italy the film was released for the first time on home video between 1993 and 1994 to works by the Granata Press. Following the bankruptcy of the latter, in 1996 it was then distributed (together with the other films of the saga) by Dynamic Italia, always with the first dubbing. Between 1999 and 2000 the second Italian edition on videotape was released, which contained various extras such as the karaoke version of the original theme songs.

In 2002 Dynamic then released a DVD edition of the film called the "Memorial Box". In November 2006, Yamato Video took over the rights of the first four films, publishing them for the first time on DVD with double Italian and original Japanese audio.
