The new adventures of Beany and Cecil, the animated series of 1988

The new adventures of Beany and Cecil was a short-lived revival animated series of Bob Clampett's Beany and Cecil cartoons from the 60s, which in Italy were known under the title Three cheerful sailors. The animated series The new adventures of Beany and Cecil was produced in 1988 by DIC Animation City. Only five half-hour episodes aired, compared to thirteen in production, during its original television programming. This incarnation of the show was produced and directed by Canadian animator John Kricfalusi, who would later make The Ren & Stimpy Show by Nickelodeon.

Production

ABC was negotiating to produce the show with the Clampett family, who insisted that John Kricfalusi would be part of the production. The lengthy negotiations delayed the start of production in mid-July, causing the animation to be rushed to meet the September deadline. Tensions rose between Kricfalusi and ABC over the tone of the show, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere for the show crew. The more ABC tried to soften the show, the more Kricfalusi pushed to produce some shocking and offensive material. The Clampett family were not very happy with the cartoon in the end, but remained sympathetic to Kricfalusi. ABC canceled the show after a handful of episodes, as they found the humor unsuitable for children's programming. As a result, ABC replaced it with The Flintstone Kids by Hanna-Barbera.
