New Rico the new animated short, graphically bold and decidedly extravagant, will make its debut on the festival circuit starting from SXSW (March 16-20). The film explores Puerto Rican identity through a Latin-Futurist lens, through its strong images and its immersive world rooted in Taino mythology.

"New Rico it's unlike anything the world that animation has ever seen before. It is a Latin-futurist film, which expresses something singular about who we are and where we are going. It is cinema that aims to decolonize and builds a path towards narratives, which give nuances and breath to our experiences. It's also a truly radiant look into the world of reggaeton, taking all that texture and wildness perreo energy in a narrative space, which is exciting to explore, ”Mercado tells us.

“The premiere of this movie at SXSW is incredible and it means a lot to me. It is the place where new stories are told, discovered and indicate the future of cinema. The Latinx revolution taking place in the heart of Texas seems right. To me it says New Rico it is here and we are the future. "

Twin brother and sister Vico and Barbie discover a heavenly secret that changes their lives forever and propels them to reggaeton stardom. But they soon discover that their newfound fame comes at a very high price.

The film stars Jackie Cruz as Barbie, Antonio Vizcarrondo as Vico, Fernando Ramos, Don Victor and Josh Madoff.

New RicoThe production team includes Cruz as executive producer, supervisor to executive producer Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings), creative director Raymo Ventura and storyboard artist / designer Angélica Agélviz, with music and sound design by Josh Madoff.
