The Upstairs Downstairs Bears – the 2001 animated series

“The Upstairs Downstairs Bears” is a stop-motion animated children's series, jointly produced by Scottish Television Enterprises and Cinar in co-production with Egmont Imagination in Denmark. The series is based on creator Carol Lawson's books of the same name and focuses on two families of teddy bears living in an Edwardian-era town house, emphasizing the importance of sharing for preschool audiences. The series consists of a single season of 13 half-hour episodes or 26 short films.

Creation of the series began in late 1998, with an estimated budget of US$3 million. Subsequently, this increased to $3,7 million, similar to that of other children's programs. The cost per episode was $430.000 in November 2000. Egmont Imagination's headquarters in Denmark handled the construction of the puppets and backdrops, which were then sent to the FilmFair studio in London for filming.

The series was broadcast in English on CITV in the United Kingdom on 9 April 2001 and on Teletoon in Canada from 3 September to 7 December 2001. In the United States it was broadcast on Smile of a Child TV. In France, it was broadcast on Télétoon as “Les oursons du square Théodore”. Internationally, it was also broadcast on Minimax in Hungary and on Hop! Channel in Israel.

The animated series received positive reviews, with Toonhound saying: “With its period-set details, golden brown hues and soft, sepia lighting, this little show evokes just the right Edwardian feel.”

Ultimately, “The Upstairs Downstairs Bears” is a beloved and appreciated series that has captured the attention of many viewers around the world.
