A lady without a husband dreams of having a baby girl. She asks for help from a good witch, who gives her a grain of barley, telling her to plant it in a pot and water it. The woman does so, and a flower is born that opens and gives birth to a girl already adolescent as big as a thumb, a characteristic that inspires her mother to name her for her daughter. Thumbelina is loved by all the animal friends on the farm where she lives and by her mother, but she dreams one day of being able to find love despite the small size that she would have kept for a lifetime.
