When Kazuya is hit by a car accident the morning before the final game of the regional tournament, Tatsuya takes over from the pitching ace brother and uses his natural talent to complete his younger brother's goal of fulfilling Minami's dream of going to the Koshien.
Characters

Tatsuya Uesugi (上杉 達 也, Uesugi Tatsuya ) The eldest of the Uesugi twins, seemingly selfish and lazy, is actually very selfless and reluctant to compete with others, especially his brother Kazuya. A naturally talented athlete, he could be successful in baseball or most sports if he committed, but let his younger brother succeed in his place. Like Kazuya, she loves Minami Asakura, the girl next door and their childhood friend, but she also initially hands this relationship over to her brother. When Tatsuya starts high school he almost joins the baseball club but, when he hears that Minami has joined as the club manager, he can't go through with it. Instead, Harada convinces him to join the boxing club with him.

Kazuya Uesugi (上杉 和 也, Uesugi Kazuya ) The youngest of the Uesugi twins. Serious, hardworking and seemingly confident in everything he does, he appears to be the exact opposite of his older brother, Tatsuya. His throwing skills, perfect manners and perfect grades make him the idol of his parents, schoolmates and the neighborhood. He and everyone else see himself and Minami as the perfect couple who will eventually get married. He strives to get Meisei to win the prefectural tournament and advance to the national tournament at the Koushien, fulfilling his childhood promise to bring Minami there. Although he projects an image of trust, he is actually always wary of his brother, knowing that if Tatsuya tries, he could be a better athlete than he is and even steal Minami.

Minami Asakura (浅 倉 南, Asakura Minami ) Neighbor and childhood friend of the Uesugi twins. A responsible, attractive, athletic and intelligent student who also has to help her father with housework and the family cafeteria since her mother died at a young age. His interests coincide more with Kazuya, whom he cares a lot and whom he fully supports on his way to the Koushien, but his heart is mainly with Tatsuya. Like Kazuya, he sees Tatsuya's true potential and kind heart. Though she wishes to focus on being the manager of the baseball team, she is eventually convinced to join the school's rhythmic gymnastics team and becomes a top athlete on her own.
Shingo Uesugi (上杉 信 悟, Uesugi Shingo ); Haruko Uesugi (上杉 晴子, Uesugi Haruko ) Tatsuya and Kazuya's parents. They are always seen flirting and making fun of each other despite the presence of the boys. Mr. Uesugi sometimes takes a straight face, usually to scold Kazuya, but he soon returns to make fun of his wife. Ms. Uesugi is always seen smiling, sometimes giggling behind her hand. They live a very carefree life, often at the expense of their children. (Shingo)
Punch (パ ン チ, Panchi ) Punch is the Uesugi Samoyed family. He has puppies in part 2 of the manga. In the anime, Punch is a male dog and the puppies are adopted strays instead.

Despite this, he maintains an optimistic and positive attitude, waiting for the day he believes that Minami and Kazuya will get married. For a while, he even hires Tatsuya part-time and sees how good a worker he can be.
Kotarō Matsudaira (松 平 孝 太郎, Matsudaira Kotarō ) The portly Meisei catcher and clean-up hitter. He is Kazuya's best friend and is always paired with him. Initially, it is vehemently against Tatsuya that he joins the baseball team, but eventually becomes attached to him and becomes as close to him as he was to Kazuya. Occasionally he expresses his jealousy of his friends' increased talent and ability to attract Minami and other girls.
Shohei Harada (原田 正 平, Harada Shohei ) - A big and menacing schoolmate at Meisei. Billed as a street brawler and bully, he actually proves to be kindhearted and very loyal to his friends, especially Tatsuya and Minami, to whom he often gives good advice on various issues. He is a member, and eventual captain, of the boxing club and initially had Tatsuya join him, forcing him to harden and exercise.
Akio Nitta (新 田 明 男, Nitta Akio) - A star slugger for Sumi Tech, the two-time winner of the prefectural tournament and second in Koshien. Akio got serious about baseball when he played Kazuya in junior high. He has a crush on Minami and is a friend of Harada's since middle school, when they were both delinquents. After Kazuya's death, he wants Tatsuya to take his place and show him "Kazuya's Proposals" again.
Yuka Nitta (新 田 由 加, Nitta Yuka ) - Akio's little sister is unusually close to her brother and also a bit childish. She enters Meisei with the excuse of spying on her brother, but she is actually there to try to seduce Tatsuya into her boyfriend. She is very good at observing and analyzing baseball players. Despite her sassy demeanor, she is also an excellent student who scores even higher on Sakata's history exams.
Isami Nishimura (西村勇, Nishimura Isami ) A somewhat presumptuous pitcher who refuses to acknowledge Tatsuya's abilities and considers Akio Nitta his real rival. He has the best curveball of any pitcher in their prefecture, but no one will stand up to brag. He also has a crush on Minami and constantly asks her to go out with her. Due to overuse of his curveball, he suffers elbow damage and can no longer pitch effectively in his final tournament.
Shigenori Nishio (西 尾 茂 則, Nishio Shigenori ) Coach of the Meisei High team. He falls ill during the last year of his brothers and must remain in hospital for the entire prefectural tournament. He assigns an interim manager, Eijiro Kashiwaba, to fill his position, advertising him as a "kind and gentle man who loves baseball from the bottom of his heart", unaware of having confused him with his older brother, the more popular Eiichiro. . Mister Nishio returns at the end of the prefectural tournament.
Eijiro Kashiwaba (柏葉 英 二郎, Kashiwaba Eijiro ) A brutal and spartan substitute coach who replaces Coach Nishio is sick. Nishio intended to recommend his brother, Eiichiro, but he or the school confused the names. On his first day, he fires Minami as manager and mercilessly beats Tatsuya. His training consists of further beating, humiliation and making players work beyond exhaustion. Most of the team's first-year members quickly resigned. He has a grudge against the Meisei baseball team due to some events that happened when he attended. He also compares the Uesugi twins' relationship to his poor relationship with his brother.
Sachiko Nishio (西 尾 佐 知 子, Nishio Sachiko ) Daughter of coach Nishio, girlfriend of Kuroki and first coach of the Meisei High team. At first, he mistakes Tatsuya for Kazuya and acknowledges his athletic abilities, encouraging him to join the team.
Takeshi Kuroki (黒 木 武, Kuroki Takeshi ) Kazuya's Upperclassman who initially explores it and finds his pitch so incredible that he selflessly gives up his position as ace of Meisei the following year. He moves to third base and becomes team captain. He and his girlfriend Sachiko see talent in Tatsuya as well as in Kazuya, and try to get him to join the team, especially after Kazuya's death.
Takeshi Yoshida (吉田剛, Yoshida Takeshi ) A transfer student at Meisei High who initially idolizes Tatsuya. He joins the team in the second year to be close to him and try to gain confidence in himself. As his skills as a pitcher increase, being able to effectively mimic both Tasuya's fastball and Nishimura's curveball with great control, he grows from confident to overconfident, conceited and condescending. He challenges Tatsuya in a throwing contest for the ace position, but before the duel can take place he must move to South America due to his father's job. Return in his third year as another team's arrogant and rude pitcher to play a match against Meisei.
