Tsurubaya Productions wins the lawsuit against an unauthorized Chinese film about Ultraman

Tsuburaya filed a lawsuit against BlueArc in 2018 for copyright infringement by Ultraman


Ultraman production company Tsuburaya Productions he won his lawsuit against the Chinese production company BlueArc on June 30th. The Shanghai court has granted damages to Tsuburaya for 38 million yen (about USD 354.900) for violation of BlueArc's copyright of the character of Tsuburaya Ultraman .

Tsuburaya filed a lawsuit against Guangzhou BlueArc in 2018 after the Chinese company produced the Dragon Force: So Long, Ultraman film in China in October 2017. The film ran for a month. The film uses the character of Ultraman like an enemy fighting a Chinese robot hero.

Tsuburaya said the film was made and advertised without the permission of the Japanese rights holder and tried to stop the film's screening through a lawsuit through a Shanghai court in September 2017. However, BlueArc continued with the l opening the film and Tsuburaya withdrew the lawsuit. Tsuburaya then filed another lawsuit in February 2018, claiming that the film's production, advertising and screening constituted a copyright infringement of the property of Ultraman

Tsurubaya Productions won a case in 2017 against UM Corporation (UMC) for international licensing rights for Ultraman ownership, stating that the 1976 “Licensing Convention” from which UMC derived its alleged license for ownership was invalid. The US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit upheld these rights last December after the UMC filed a motion to overturn the verdict. BlueArc's license application on the property was based on the same “Licensing Agreement”.
