Helmer Matthew the director of "Hair Love" will make his debut in the animated film "Tut"

Matthew A. Cherry, director of the Oscar-winning short film for the animated series “Hair Love ", will make its animated feature film debut with a new Sony Pictures Animation project. The project, temporarily titled Tut , will be a story of Afro-Futurist formation, centered on the Egyptian boy-king Tutankhamun. The original story, created by Cherry and producer Monica A. Young, will take audiences on an adventure through ancient Egypt and celebrate the culture that introduced countless innovations to the world.

"I am very excited to explore the magical world of ancient Egypt through the eyes of its youngest ruler, King Tut," Cherry told the magazine. Variety. "I've always wanted to dive deeper into the legend of the boy king and we can't think of better partners to go on this journey with than Kristine Belson, Karen Toliver and the great people of Sony Pictures Animation."

Belson, president of Sony Pictures Animation, added: “Matthew is one of the most outstanding creative voices today. We were privileged to collaborate with him on his first animated short, which has since evolved into his first animated series - and we are so proud to be collaborating on his first animated film again, Tut. Matthew has a bold and modern take on this rarely told story, filled with magic, music and powerful themes - and we're thrilled to be able to embark on this adventure together. "

Toliver is Creative's EVP for Sony Pictures Animation and also won an Oscar for her work as a producer on Hair love. He will once again work alongside Cherry Young Love - a new HBO Max animated series based on the short film, for which Cherry serves as showrunner.

Cherry recently directed the first animated episode of  B  as the second part of the "Electoral Special" lasting one hour.

Sony Pictures Animation's next program includes Connected, produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller and awaiting a new release date due to COVID-19; Chinese co-professional wish dragon (2020), with Jackie Chan; SPA's first ever musical, Living (2021), with songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda; Hotel Transylvania 4 (2021) and the Spider-Man - A new universe (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) sequel (2021), also with Lord / Miller.
