Characters

Violet Evergarden (ヴ ァ イ オ レ ッ ト ・ エ ヴ ァ ー ガ ー デ ン, Vaioretto Evāgāden)

Violet is a newcomer to the CH Postal Company and works as an Auto Memory Doll, a ghostwriter for people who can't write or who seek help expressing their emotions in letters.
As an abandoned and nameless child, Violet was found by naval officer Dietfried Bougainvillea on an island where he and several of his crew were forced to disembark after a naval confrontation. Her fighting prowess was discovered when she killed several soldiers who attempted to rape her before she could stop them. Violet then chased and killed all the other crew members. For reasons she did not understand, Violet spared Dietfried and obeyed his orders. Later, Dietfried took Violet home and "gifted" her to his brother Gilbert in the army as a gift for his promotion to major, with the intention that Gilbert would use her as a "tool" for the war while not wanting to manage himself. Violet. Gilbert instead treated her like a human, taught her to speak, read and write and called her Violetta, wishing she could grow up to be as beautiful as a flower. During the war, he repeatedly played a vital role in battles. Trying to save Gilbert in the decisive battle of the war, he lost both arms. With the end of the war, her arms were replaced with advanced metal prosthetics and she decided to become an Auto Memory Doll to learn the meaning of the words "I love you" (愛 し て る, Aishiteru) - Gilbert's last words to her before lost consciousness on the battlefield.
At first she was a girl who needed orders from others and had no sense of autonomy. Later, as he got along with Gilbert, he slowly learned words and words. During an outing, she obtained an emerald brooch that was as beautiful as Gilbert's eye color, and she always wore it, protecting her like her master's clone. For Violet, Gilbert is a special and irreplaceable existence.

Dietfried shows Gilbert why Violet should be just a "weapon" by arranging for her to fight and kill five thieves and murderers he has captured on his ship. Later, Gilbert demonstrates Violet's military prowess by doing her own battle and killing ten death row inmates in a military "training camp".
