History

The series takes place in Beverly Hills, California and tells the adventures of a fictional "Teen Club", made up of a group of wealthy teenagers of about sixteen. Common spaces include the lavish junior high school, country club, local salon and spa, and the shopping street on Rodeo Drive. The main protagonist is Laura (Larke), a blonde-haired, blue-eyed high school student and model who has been kind and generous to her friends. The second protagonist is the handsome heartthrob Roy (Troy), who, like Laura (Larke), is brilliant and nice, and is often the object of affection for other girls.

Providing much of the conflict in the series is the raven-haired beauty of Bianca, who sees Laura (Larke) as her main rival for everything from the lead in high school play, to the title of Homecoming Queen, and most importantly. , for the affection of Roy (Troy). Sharing his contempt for the perfect match is Pierce, an effeminate, narcissistic boy who introduces himself as a "gentleman" but resents Roy (Troy's) relationship with Laura (Larke). Plots often involve Bianca or Pierce, or sometimes both of them working together, plotting and / or manipulating events in an attempt to sabotage Laura (Larke) and Roy (Troy )'s romance, as well as various other relationships within the Teen. Club.

Other Teen Club girls include rocker Jett, cowgirl Blaze, aspiring actress Nikki, Southern Belle Tara, Teen Club president Shanelle, and gossip columnist Switchboard. The other guys at the Teen Club include rocker Gig, surfer Radley, autopromotor Buck Huckster, and Bianca Wilshire's chauffeur. In addition to their group of peers, the boys are often accompanied by two young men, the male genius Chester and Pierce Jillian's little sister, while the rivalry between Larke's cat "Tiara" and Bianca's poodle "Empress" often provides the series its more traditional slapstick comedy elements.

Production

In January 1987, Cable Services reported that Access Syndication, which was a partner of DIC Enterprises and Coca-Cola Telecommunications, had three new children's animated series in development for the fall of that year. The three series claimed to be in various stages of production at the time were Tiffany Blake, Starcom: The US Space Force, and Beverly Hills Teens.

Described by one columnist as "emotional rich kids attending classrooms equipped with antique Louis XIV desks," Beverly Hills Teens was touted by producers as a response to more violent series targeting children, arguing that the new series would be less action-oriented. and more character-based and would provide "healthy role models for children".

Access Syndicate President Ritch Colbert complained about the state of children's entertainment at the time, stating that "children's programming these days is dominated by neo-militarist animation of children's toys." Quoting shows like Silver Hawks, ThunderCats and G.I. Joe, which were popular animated series of the time, Colbert continued "Where are Tom and Jerry, the Flintstones, the rich characters for children to cultivate, develop and identify with?"

Asked if the "happy money" teens residing in Beverly Hills would be the best examples for children, Colbert retorted, "Well, they may be a little richer than most teens, but they have the typical problems of teens and the what is important is that they are fully realized personalities ".

During development, the first names of the four main characters in the series were reported as "Troy", "Chrissie", "Raven" and "Pierce". Although the boys 'names would remain in the production of the series, the girls' names were subsequently changed, with "Chrissie" eventually becoming the star of the "Larke" series and "Raven" eventually being renamed "Bianca".
