Gremlins o The Gremlins in Quebec è un film americano diretto
da Joe Dante, pubblicato nel 1984. Presenta piccole creature immaginarie
che devastano una città e sono chiamate Gremlins. Un sequel,
prodotto anche da Joe Dante e intitolato Gremlins 2, la nuova generazione
(Gremlins 2: The New Batch), è stato rilasciato nel 1990.
Randall Peltzer (Hoyt Axton), chiamato "Rand", è
un inventore stravagante con le creazioni dei più dubbiosi.
Dalla fittizia città di Kingston Falls, viaggia a Chinatown
a New York per cercare di vendere le sue invenzioni e trovare un regalo
di Natale originale per suo figlio Billy (Zach Galligan). Un giovane
cinese lo porta nel negozio di suo nonno, il signor Wing e non riuscendo
a piazzare una delle sue invenzioni come "il bagno tascabile",
si interessa a una piccola creatura pelosa , un mogwai (che in cinese
si traduce letteralmente come "cattivo spirito"). Ma il
signor Wing (Keye Luke) rifiuta categoricamente di vendere il mogwai
nonostante l'offerta di Rand di duecento dollari. Secondo lui, prendere
in carico il piccolo animale comporta responsabilità troppo
pesanti per il suo acquirente.
