BerrBerry Bees is an animated series for Nine Network that premiered on 9Go! in Australia on 5 October 2019. [1] The series is based on the Italian book series of the same name by Cat Le Blanc. The series is produced by Atlantyca Entertainment, SLR Productions, Telegael and Cosmos-Maya Production. In Italy, the series will be previewed on Rai Gulp on 16 December 2019 at 18

Is the world ready for a 10-year-old team of dynamic spies? The Italian family entertainment and publishing company Atlantyca believes it. The groundbreaking studio behind hits like Geronimo Stilton and Bat Pat has joined forces with Australia SLR Productions, Ireland Telegael and India Cosmos-Maya to produce the new animated series titled Berry Bees. The cartoon, consisting of 52 episodes each lasting 11 minutes, follows the adventures of Bobby, Lola and Juliette, three apparently normal school-age children who have actually been selected by the BIA (Bee Intelligence Agency) to carry out missions. of high-level spies.

As the producer and executive director of the series Niccol Sacchi says, the new venture marks the first time that Atlantyca has not developed the animated series based on an already existing successful publishing property. "For Berry Bees, the idea came to our production department in the very early stages," he explains. It was really just a concept, basically just a few lines on paper, but we found it so perfect. It was exactly what we were looking for - strong female characters, action-packed series, modern spy stories - and we decided to start a co-development process with the editorial department. We went in and turned it into a possible project - knowing from the start it had wonderful potential .

Sacchi says the funding for the show came quickly. "The market was immediately drawn to the idea and everyone saw the potential of the project," he notes. We started at a very early stage, even earlier than we usually get involved. So I started visualizing the series and worked closely with our editorial director to shape the characters and their world .

He says his team was very aware of the differences between editorial and television brands. We know the differences and requirements, but who is better suited than us to tackle this project, as we have had the history of adapting one of the most famous in the world. At the same time, having worked so long on the adaptation with the idea of a possible animated series in the works, we were able to build a kind of transmedia skeleton for the property that was quite useful both in terms of design and storytelling and aspects of the project. "

One of the reasons why Sacchi and his team were drawn to the project was the simple charm of its main characters. What I enjoyed most was the challenge of creating three "normal girls", without superpowers, extraordinary inside and sometimes outside. Espionage stories can always be intriguing. The challenge is to build a story interesting enough to be considered a genre of espionage, while still maintaining the fast pace and action elements required by young viewers. We opted for a mix of the "vintage" glamor of classic James Bond films with the action-packed scenes and ultra-futuristic technology of the modern Mission: Impossible series. "

As Atlantyca is working closely with SLR, Telegael and Cosmos-Maya to deliver the project, Sacchi claims to have developed a very creative division of tasks on this project. "The scripts are written mainly by Italian and Irish writers with an Australian story editor," he explains. "The same goes for the storyboards, which are mainly made by Italian and Australian teams, with a limited number of Irish storyboarders. From a design point of view, we are working with Italian characters, Australian backgrounds and props split between Italy and Australia. . The project is colored in Ireland ".

The show's visual team found inspiration in a wide variety of classic and modern sources. In addition to the Mission: Impossible and James Bond films, Sacchi chooses "The Incredibles"by Brad Bird for character animation and action scenes. However, she is a popular Disney TV heroine who is a major influence on the show. Kim Possible all the time, due to the fantastic direction of the show and the staging of the shots. one of my favorite shows of all time. In terms of design, our reference was complicated. I wanted to have the same feeling for the characters without outline and where shadows were used to give depth to the skin and expressions of the characters. Creating and playing with 10-year-old characters whose special abilities are only part of their everyday life has been satisfying enough for Sacchi and his team. Explain: For example, Lola She is a contortionist, but she can also use that skill in the classroom. Or, Juliette she has special talents as an actress and telepath, but she can also make a great impression on her principal at school. Bobby he can use his hacking skills to change all the photos of his classmates into photos of kittens. In short, we have like-minded characters who are fun to build stories 24/7 .

Sacchi hopes that the public will enjoy the fantastic adventures of Berry Bees because they offer the classic prizes of the fun genre of espionage and science fiction. "What's more thrilling than being part of a spy story?" He asks. The secret missions, the undercover identities, the cool gadgets - not to mention the exciting action sequences, sneaking around and rewarding battles with villains. I hope our audience will take all those elements and 'create' their own adventures using their imaginations. Whether they prefer Lola, Juliette or Bobby, or all three, it doesn't matter. It's about playing spy and having fun. This is what I hope audiences get from our show. "
