Watchmen

Aadventurous, mysterious and complex, "Watchmen" is set in an alternate reality of 1985, in America, where a group of costumed superheroes is an integral part of everyday social reality, and the "Apocalypse Clock" - which represents the tension between the US and the Soviet Union - always marks five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is killed, the masked vigilante named Rorschach, no longer in vogue but still energetic and determined, takes action to uncover the plot that aims to kill and discredit all superheroes past and present. As Rorschach reconnects with his former legion of fighters - a rude group of retired superheroes, only one of which possesses true powers - Rorschach uncovers a vast and disturbing conspiracy linked to their past, which could cause a real catastrophe. Their mission is to watch over humanity. But who will watch over the Watchmen?

The Watchmen movie is based on a 12-issue comic miniseries written by the award-winning modern comic genius Alan Moore and drawn by British Dave Gibbons. The series was released by DC Comics in 1986 and won the Hugo Award, and was considered one of the 100 best English novels written since 1923.

The innovative feature that mainly differentiates Watchmen from the genre comics that preceded it, is that of presenting the superheroes protagonists more in the human and "everyday" aspect rather than in the extraordinary and adventurous one, "deconstructing" the archetype of the conventional superhero. Here then are described their ethical and personal problems, the relationship difficulties between the members of the group, their defects and their neuroses, often referable to particular events in their past. Furthermore, none of them - with one notable exception - possesses any superpowers: they are ordinary people who have decided to do the job, common in the Watchmen universe, of the "masked executioner". To this must be added a wise application of cinematographic techniques, a wide use of symbols, dialogues with multiple interpretative levels and metanarration.
