Nills Holgersson (Japanese original title Nils no Fushigi na Tabi) is a 1980 anime co-produced by Japanese Studio Pierrot (in its first production) and German Apollo Film in 52 episodes. The series is inspired by the children's novel "The wonderful journey of Nils Holgersson" (in Swedish Nils Holgerssons underbara surrendered genom Sverige), published in 1906 by the Swedish writer Nobel Prize for literature Selma Lagerl f.
Nils Holgersson is a XNUMX year old who lives with his parents in southern Sweden. Nils, at the beginning of the story, is not a good boy, but a hooligan whose favorite pastime is to pester the animals on his parents' farm.
But one day, for having teased a tomt (a kind of Scandinavian goblin), the latter decides to punish him and will bewitch him, transforming him into a small gnome. Once the spell is cast, Nils will only regain his original size if he is convinced that he is improved. With this spell, Nils is therefore no bigger than a mouse. However, fate gave him the ability to understand and communicate with animals. So Nils, accompanied by his hamster Quenotte (also shrunken), tries to stop a farm duck from escaping with a troop of wild geese on their migration through Sweden, and finds himself involved in the journey.
Wild geese, which aren't all happy to be joined by a baby and a domestic goose, will end up taking him on a long journey through all of Sweden's historic provinces. They will live many adventures and meet many people, like Smirre the fox. During the journey, the characters and situations encountered by Nils will teach him to be generous in helping people and not to be selfish. Over the course of the episodes Nils will improve his behavior and will return to his normal size.
