The cartoon Fantaman (Ogon Bat the original title) was broadcast for the first time in Italy in 1981, on various local television stations. The series is based on Takeo Nagamatsu's novel "Ogon Bat" (literally "golden bat"). Produced by Daiichi Doga in 1967 and directed by Nobuhide Morikawa, the anime consists of 52 episodes, each lasting 25 minutes. From 1 May the cartoon will be broadcast by the satellite broadcaster Cultoon. The story begins with the expedition led by Doctor Corallo, an archaeologist who, together with his sons, embarked on a search for the lost continent of Atlantis. From the bottom of the ocean, a gigantic monster emerges, which with a large hand sinks the ship with all the crew. The only supertite is Maria, the daughter of Doctor Corallo, who is helped by the learned Steele, a scientist who fortunately was experimenting with his inventions in that area, along with his son Terry and the strong assistant Gaby. Their aircraft, however, is attacked by the monster of Doctor Zero, a mad scientist who wants to conquer the world and always comes up with the phrase "The world is mine!", Accompanied by a diabolical laugh.
The group takes refuge on an island, which happens to be Atlantis, the one that was looking for Doctor Corallo. Following strange writings in an ancient language, which only Maria can decipher, the group descends into a catacomb where the tomb of Fantaman, the ancient emperor of Atlantis, a man with the face of a skull and a black cloak resides. Translating an ancient phrase, Maria awakens Fantaman from his millennial sleep and thanks to water, his source of energy, he receives super powers.
Fantaman intervenes in defense of Maria and her companions, fighting against the monster of Doctor Zero who had sunk the ship, thanks to his extraordinary abilities: he can fly, he fights with a frightening force and is equipped with a magic staff, which he can use in a thousand ways. Fantaman is always accompanied by a golden bat and a chilling laugh and appears at each episode, after being evoked by a prayer from Mary. The novel by Ogon Bat, takes up an ancient popular legend and is the first Japanese masked hero.
