In a world filled with strange gods and monsters from Japanese mythology, one of the creature's free-spirited daughters, Onari, is determined to follow in the footsteps of the mighty heroes of lore, but her unique powers have yet to be revealed. But will his powers be enough to protect his peaceful village from the intrusive presence of the mysterious "Oni", who threatens the gods?

Tonko House co-founder Daisuke "Dice" Tsutsumi will be the creator and showrunner of the series. Megan Bartel will produce, while Tonko House co-founder Robert Kondo, Kane Lee and Zen Miyake serve as executive producers. Early development partners include Japanese nano stop-motion animation studios (Rilakkuma and Kaoru) and special effects house CG Megalis VFX, also based in Japan.

Tsutsumi states:“Having spent my entire career in the American animation industry, part of me always wondered if there would ever be a place in the stories I tell for the other half of my identity, as a Japanese native. Tonko House with Netflix is perhaps a unique opportunity for me to freely embrace my unique background to share with the rest of the world the wonderful stories I grew up with in Japan, especially those that I believe are appropriate for the society we live in today. . "

Netflix director Aram Yacoubian said. "We are thrilled to partner with Dice and the rest of the Tonko team on this incredibly sweet, self-discovery story rooted in Japanese folklore. Dice is a well-known director with a deep passion for celebrating Japanese culture and we are honored to support his foray into animated series alongside the Tonko team. We fell in love with Onari and the specific Japanese mythology built around her, and are confident that her personal and recognizable story of self-discovery will resonate with audiences around the world.."
