Fruits basket, written and drawn by Takaya Tatsuki, is an enjoyable and entertaining manga, which harmoniously combines traditional, ironic and romantic elements. In Japan, the cartoon of Fruit basket It was made by Deen, while in Italy we can find the manga thanks to the publication of Dynamic Italia, at the best comic shops. The protagonist of the story is Tohru, a very sweet and sunny sixteen year old who, lost both parents, lives alone in a tent and supports herself thanks to a part-time job. Despite the difficulties that derive from it, Tohru never loses heart. This is the teaching of mother Kyoko, an extraordinary woman of courage, much loved by the girl and her point of reference. When her father passed away (Torhu was three years old), the mother Kyoko worked hard so as not to let her little girl miss anything, filling her with affection. Our friend keeps a souvenir photo of her mother, very dear. One morning, apparently like all the others, something will change in the life of our protagonist. On his way to school, Tohru sees twelve pieces of stone in the garden of a large house, each representing a sign of the Japanese zodiac; noting that among these the figure of the cat is missing, he remembers an ancient legend: one day God decided to give a big lunch, to which he invited all members of the zodiac. The mouse, fearing that it could be eaten by the cat, cheated him by giving him a wrong date; to his great dismay the poor animal was the only one not to participate in the wonderful banquet; therefore the cat does not appear among the stone statuettes, but that is not all! The two animals, who have become bitter enemies, will look for any excuse to quarrel

The girl does not fail to express her sympathies for the cat, as the victim of an injustice, to the owner of the house, Shigure (an extravagant young man of 26, wearing the traditional kimono). An interesting conversation arises between the two, which will be interrupted by the arrival of Yuki, her schoolmate: Tohru met the progenitor of the Shoma family and discovered that he is the cousin of the boy she likes. Just think, Yuki Shoma is so beautiful and captivating that a small group of obsessed girls in the school founded a Fans Club for him; obsession that Yuki just doesn't deserve, considering his shy and rude attitudes (what's more, he is also a lazy boy and clumsy in manual jobs). But why so much grumpiness towards girls?

You must know that the members of the Shoma family are subjected to the curse of the Chinese zodiac: every time one of them is embraced by a representative of the opposite sex, it transforms into the corresponding zodiac sign, absorbing all its characteristics. But the beauty is that when they return to their human form they are completely naked (wherever they find themselves ;-))! From the Chinese zodiac Yuki embodies the mouse and Shigure the dog. Tohru wins the sympathies of Shigure and, all in all, of Yuki thanks to his sensitive and cheerful personality, so much so that when the two discover that he lives in a tent, they will want to host her in their home (until the restoration work of the grandfather of the young woman will not be finished and she will be able to go and live there).

The insistence with which they will try to convince the girl will be such as to make her capitulate, even after two episodes: too much stress and too much effort make Tohru sick and, ironically, a landslide hits the tent, demolishing it. During the night our friend, in the grip of delirium, tells about her mother, remorse, worries and difficulties While Shigure takes care of the girl, Yuki, struck by her confessions, goes to retrieve Kioko's photograph from under the rubble (surprising and significant gesture for his hostile and listless character!). The next day Tohru wakes up completely fit and happy to have found the precious portrait photo next to him; so he decides to move into the Shoma house, on condition that he takes care of the household chores. Just as she and Yuki are conversing, a handsome red-haired boy bursts into the room, wasting no time insulting Yuki. The young woman intervenes for fear that the two will fight, but stumbles on something and ends up in the arms of the newcomer To her great surprise, Tohru finds herself in her arms a ruffled red kitten: in this way she gets to know Kyou, the cousin rival of Yuki, who in the Chinese horoscope is the cat. On this occasion, our friend will discover the secret of the Shoma family and will begin an eventful and unpredictable life for her; yet cheerful and full of friendship! The presence of Tohru and his generosity will help the Shoma (primarily Yuki and Kyou) to resolve many contradictions, so that they will learn to accept themselves.

It must be said that the friendship with the "men" of the Shoma house will attract the envy of Tohru, on one side of the members of the fans Club, on the other of Kagura. The latter is also part of the Shoma (like them it transforms, embodying the sign of the boar) and has an ambivalent nature. Seemingly small and defenseless, she becomes aggressive every time she sees or deals with Kyou, because she is in love with him and can find no other way to prove it than with blows. Don't worry though! To protect and defend the protagonist of Fruits Basket there will be her two friends for the skin: Hanajima and Uotami. Hanjima has a great introspective capacity, that is, she guesses the personality of others and exercises control over electromagnetic waves (discharging them on those who don't like her). Uotami is an ex-hooligan, therefore she knows well how to defend herself; Kyoko, who before getting married was part of an all-positive gang, was her idol. Among the other characters we find Tohru's grandfather, a 'good-natured' and likeable old man, who welcomes his granddaughter with pleasure; and some uncles who will not fail to put the young protagonist in difficulty But if you are curious to know more about the events of Fruits Basket and its protagonists, do not miss this funny manga; -) !!!
