Akira is a milestone in the history of animation: it blends elements of 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Warriors of the Night, Blade Runner and The Forbidden Planet and is counted by Wired among the 30 best science fiction films of all time together Blade Runner, Gattaca and Matrix. The anime project involved 1.300 animators from 50 different animation studios and was released on July 16, 1988, by which time the manga's popularity had reached its peak.
