Angel Beats! - The 2010 anime series

Angel Beats! - The 2010 anime series

Angel Beats!  is a 13-episode Japanese television animated (anime) series produced by PAWorks and Aniplex and directed by Seiji Kishi. The story was originally conceived by Jun Maeda, who also wrote the script and composed the music with the Anant-Garde Eyes group, with the original character design of Na-Ga; both Maeda and Na-Ga come from the visual novel brand Key, which has produced titles such as Kanon, Air, and Clannad. The anime aired in Japan between April 3 and June 26, 2010 on CBC. The original home video animation (OVA) episode was released in December 2010 and a second OVA was released in June 2015. The story takes place in the afterlife and focuses on Otonashi, a boy who has lost his memories of his life after death. He is enrolled in the afterlife school and meets a girl named Yuri who invites him to join the Afterlife Battlefront, an organization she leads that fights student council president Kanade Tachibana, a girl also known as Angel with supernatural powers. .

Angel Beats!

Key worked in partnership with Dengeki G's ASCII Media Works' magazine to produce the project in a supporting franchise. Four manga series are published in series on Dengeki G's Magazine and Dengeki G's Comic: two illustrated by Haruka Komowata and two drawn by Yuriko Asami. A series of illustrated short stories written by Maeda and illustrated by GotoP were also serialized in Dengeki G's Magazine between the November 2009 and May 2010 issues. Two Internet radio programs were produced to promote Angel Beats! . The first volume of a six-part episodic visual novel adaptation produced by Key was released for Windows on June 26, 2015.

Angel Beats!  received generally positive reviews from critics. The integration of various individual elements, such as musical performance, humor and action, was praised in one review but panned in another, saying the story was overloaded with too many elements. PAWorks was praised for the animation of the action sequences and attention to detail with the weapons used. A major flaw noted by critics, however, was the length of the anime, with its short duration leaving many of the characters' backstories unexplored. The anime was selected as a recommended work by the jury of the awards of the 14th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2010.

History

Angel Beats! is set in a high school in the afterlife, a kind of limbo for people who have experienced traumas or difficulties in life and must overcome them before dying and reincarnating. The story follows Yuzuru Otonashi, a boy with amnesia who ends up in the afterlife. Meet Yuri Nakamura, a girl who invites him to join the Afterlife Battlefront, or SSS, an organization she founded and led that rebels against an invisible God, for their unfair circumstances in life. Their enemy is Angel, the student council president, who has supernatural powers and is believed to be a collaborator of God. After joining the SSS, Otonashi meets other members, including Hideki Hinata, the co-founder; Masami Iwasawa, the lead singer of a four-girl rock band, Girls Dead Monster (GDM); and Yui, an underclassman and GDM fan. In addition to members of the SSS, the afterlife is populated by fictional students and teachers, whom Yuri calls "non-player characters" (NPCs).

Otonashi participates in several SSS operations and missions, despite continuing to question the morality of their actions. During one of GDM's diversion concerts, Iwasawa passes from the afterlife after achieving satisfaction through his music. After the SSS manages to downgrade Angel from his position, Otonashi partially recovers his memories with the help of Vice President Ayato Naoi's hypnosis.. He later befriends Angel, whose real name is Kanade Tachibana, and remembers the rest of his past while in his presence. Otonashi helps her make peace with the SSS and discovers the true purpose of the afterlife. He later offers to help Kanade help other SSS members pass, and Kanade is reinstated as student council president in accordance with their plan. They are joined by Hinata and Naoi, with the former helping Yui to move forward by fulfilling her desire for marriage.

Mysterious shadow-like entities begin to appear, attacking the afterlife residents turning them into NPCs. Otonashi reasons with the other members of the SSS and many of them agree to switch instead of becoming an NPC. Yuri destroys the source of the shadows, which were created by computers programmed to activate when love is detected in the afterlife, to prevent it from becoming a paradise. Her affection for the SSS members allows her to finally overcome her regret and, at this point, the only others who have not died are Otonashi, Kanade, Hinata and Naoi. The five remaining students hold a graduation ceremony before Naoi, Yuri and Hinata pass by leaving only Otonashi and Kanade.

Otonashi confesses to Kanade that he has fallen in love with her and wants them to stay in the afterlife to help others move forward. However, Kanade reveals that her regret wasn't that she couldn't thank her heart's giver, Otonashi, for extending her life. Otonashi is heartbroken after she thanks him and leaves, leaving him alone in the afterlife. Later, two people who look like Otonashi and Kanade meet on the street in the real world. In an alternate epilogue, Otonashi becomes the president of the high school student council and helps lost souls from the afterlife while waiting to see Kanade again.

He had a younger sister, Hatsune (初 音, voiced by: Mai Nakahara (Japanese); Jessica Boone (English)), who died of an unknown but debilitating disease that she cared a lot about. When he died, he decided to go to school to become a doctor, but he died in a train accident before he could take the college entrance exam. She invites Otonashi to join the SSS, an organization she founded and leads that fights against God. She is intelligent and decisive when making operations and decisions. He carries a 92 silver Beretta. Not only is he proficient with a pistol, but he is also proficient in close range hand-to-hand combat, which is shown when he repels Kanade's sonic hand with a combat knife. She swore to fight God after her three younger brothers were murdered by thieves in search of valuables and never forgave herself for not preventing their death. She is an effective leader, but she doesn't think so. He also regrets having a fight with Kanade later in the story, because he feels he could have been great friends with her. He disappears after the graduation ceremony.

Kanade Tachibana

Kanade Tachibana - Angel Beats!

Kanade, initially known as Angel (天使, Tenshi), is the student council president of the afterlife school. This puts her at odds with the SSS as her responsibilities require her to suppress delinquency and other destructive activities the team does. The SSS initially calls her Angel as they don't know her real name, but they keep calling her with it even after they find out that her real name is Kanade Tachibana. It is difficult to understand what he is thinking due to the fact that he rarely shows external emotions and his way of speaking in no uncertain terms. He is personally dedicated to helping others overcome their regrets and move on. However, she often lacks adequate understanding of others, as she never thinks of trying to explain to the SSS why she was doing what she did. She likes to eat mapo doufu, a spicy dish.
Despite his gentle demeanor and small frame, he is incredibly powerful and nearly indestructible to the point of ejecting bullets from his wounds during battle. He creates his powers known as "guard ability" through a computer program called Angel Player. His primary ability is "hand sonic", a blade on one or both forearms with five shapes. Other abilities include but are not limited to: "distortion", an invisible barrier that deflects projectiles or other projectiles; “Delay”, which creates an afterimage to confuse opponents; and “harmonics”, where from the original a clone with a conscience of its own is formed. These abilities are activated at will; however, its overdrive capability, which gives it great physical strength, is always active.

Hinata is a bright and reliable guy, the closest to Otonashi. He always tries to save his friends if he can and is a reliable force on the team. He and Yui constantly irritate each other every day, but deep down he takes care of Yui, as shown when he helps her get through by telling her he was going to marry her. He is a talented baseball player, and his lifelong regret was not being able to catch a baseball, which cost his team a major baseball game. She nicknamed Yuri after Yurippe when they co-founded the SSS because she didn't feel comfortable calling her Yuri, because her mother has the same name. He has shown romantic feelings towards Yuri in Track Zero, although he finds himself drawn to Yui much later in the series. He died hit by a truck. It uses an RPK-74 and an S&W 645.

When his brother died, he was forced to replace him by his father and was given rigorous pottery training, even though he was scolded severely if he was wrong. As a result, he felt like his own life was fake and all he wanted was to be recognized for his own existence. He later befriends Otonashi after recognizing him and joins the SSS. As interim student council president for a time and a self-proclaimed God, Naoi is stern and arrogant, but quickly disperses when Otonashi chastises him. She wears a devil's tail and bracelets on her wrists, which give her the image of a little devil or a devil. It also has wings hidden by the hair on its back. After Iwasawa's departure, Yui becomes the new rhythm guitarist and singer of Girls Dead Monster, as well as its leader. Yui plays a Gibson SG Special electric guitar. He later joins the main SSS, following them on missions, although he doesn't contribute much. In life, she was hit by a car and was paralyzed from a young age. Yuri herself says not to be fooled by his glasses and that in reality he is an idiot.
