HBO Max dethrones “The Prince” from Growing Adult Toon Empire

In an interview on the TCA tour, Casey Bloys, Chief Content Officer of HBO and HBO Max, told Deadline that The Prince, the UK royal family's adult animation, has not been revamped for the streaming platform. However, the executive noted that "adult animation is still full steam ahead" under comedy chief Suzanna Makkos (formerly of FOX), who has "an entire series in the pipeline."

Created by Gary Jenetti from his Instagram cartoon series, The Prince drew criticism for targeting royal children with his "biting, satirical look at the life of Prince George of Cambridge" (voiced by Janetti), third in the line of succession to the throne. The upheavals at the Windsor house also had their effect: the 20th animation show was silently launched in July after a delay in homage to the death of Prince Philip; the queen's consort was one of the main characters (voiced by Dan Stevens), as were Prince Harry (Orlando Bloom) and Megan, Duchess of Sussex (Lucy Punch), who stepped away from court in 2020.

As Prince Charles once said: “Something as curious as the monarchy will not survive unless you take into account people's attitudes. After all, if people don't want it, they won't have it. "

As for HBO Max's surviving adult animation slate, Emmy winner JG Quintel's Close Enough (Regular Show) has been renewed for a second and third season. This was announced almost exactly a year ago, along with a healthy lineup of reboots and originals:

  • Clone High (two seasons) - A modern update to the hit series from Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Bill Lawrence. Screenwriter Erica Rivinoja returns as showrunner. Produced by MTV Entertainment.
  • Velma (10 episodes) - An animated comedy for adults that explores the origins of Scooby-Doo's underrated brains. Exec produced and starring Mindy Kaling. Produced by Warner Bros. Animation.
  • Fired on Mars - An existential workplace comedy set on the campus of a Martian tech company. Created by Nate Sherman and Nick Vokey. Exec produced and performed by Pete Davidson.
  • Hi Paul (in development) - Musician Sean Solomon's concept of a neurotic millennial cat.
  • Obi (in development) - Adapted from Obi Arisukwu's popular Instagram comic about an aspiring 30-year-old artist sailing into adulthood; co-created with Arthur Harris. Produced by Outlier Society by Michael B. Jordan, Studio71 and David Devries.
  • Uncanny Valley (in development) - Three clumsy house robots kill their human owners and assume their identities. Exec produced by Ed Helms, creators Brendan Walter and Greg Yagolnitzer and writer Andrew Guest. Produced by Universal Television, Pacific Electric Picture Company.
  • Cover (in development) - Brian Michael Bendis and David Mack adapt their spy thriller DC Comics; writing and directing respectively. Produced by Teeth of rooster.

It hasn't been confirmed whether HBO's Max Ten Year Old Tom and Santa, Inc. adult animated originals would return. The platform is also currently home to the long-running hit of Comedy Central South Park; however, on Tuesday it was announced that the show will switch to Paramount + network's ViacomCBS sibling streamer - the platform will be the exclusive home of Kyle, Stan, Cartman and Kenny by 2025.
