Hideaki Anno oversees the remastered collection of Shin Complete Thunderbirds TV
Star Channel announced Wednesday that Evangelion director Hideaki Anno is overseeing Shin Complete Thunderbirds, a "digest version" of the 1965-1966 puppet television series Thunderbirds with HD remastered footage.

When he was 25, Anno had worked on The Complete Thunderbirds compilation in 1985 as his first professional editing job. The original materials for the 1985 compilation were discovered in a warehouse of the Tohokushinsha Film Corporation, so Anno is overseeing the restoration and HD remastering for the Shin edition.

Shin Complete Thunderbirds commemorates Thunderbirds 55 / GoGo, the recent Thunderbirds: The Anniversary Episodes movie collection for Japanese screening. Shin Complete Thunderbirds will air on BS 10 Star Channel in 2022. It will also be streamed on Star Channel's EX-Drama & Classics service.

Shin Godzilla director Shinji Higuchi is compiling Thunderbirds: The Anniversary Episodes into a single film titled Thunderbirds 55 / GoGo, which will be released in Japan on January 7th. Higuchi and Anno are both part of the original artist collective that founded the Gainax anime studio, and have previously collaborated on other projects, including co-director of Shin Godzilla.

Thunderbirds 55 / GoGo celebrates the 55th anniversary of the franchise. Thunderbirds: The Anniversary Episodes was a crowdfunded project to produce three episodes of Thunderbirds with much of the same staff as the original series. The episodes, produced from the audio of three previous 60s audio plays for the franchise, debuted in 2015.

Thunderbirds originally aired in the UK in 1965. The series was remade into the television anime series Kagaku Kyujotai Techno Voyager in 1982, although Thunderbirds co-creators Gerry and Sylvia Anderson were not directly involved in the production. The English dubbed version of the series was renamed Thunderbirds 2086.
