Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that the original anime The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim from New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation will be released in theaters on April 12, 2024.

The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim explores and expands the untold story behind the fortress of Helm's Deep, delving into the life and bloody times of one of Middle-earth's most legendary figures: the mighty king of Rohan, Helm Hammerhand.

The release comes 21 years after the culmination of the Lord of the Rings trilogy based on the iconic books by JRR Tolkien. The films are among the most acclaimed and most successful of all time, winning 17 Oscars, including 11 for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, setting a single film record.

Award-winning director Kenji Kamiyama (Blade Runner: Black Lotus Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) directs, with Oscar-winning Philippa Boyens, the scriptwriting team of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, executive producer and Joseph Chou (Blade Runner: Black Lotus) producer. The writing team of Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou wrote the screenplay based on a screenplay by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. The Lord of the Rings return creative team also includes Academy Award winner Richard Taylor and esteemed Tolkien illustrator John Howe.

“I am amazed at the creative talent that has come together to bring this epic and moving story to life, from Kenji Kamiyama's craftsmanship to a truly stellar cast. I am looking forward to sharing this adventure with film fans around the world, ”said Boyens.

“The Lord of the Rings films took Tolkien's masterpieces to new cinematic levels and inspired a generation. It is a gift to be able to revisit Middle-earth with many of the same creative visionaries and the talented Kenji Kamiyama at the helm. This will be an epic portrait unlike anything audiences have ever seen, ”said Toby Emmerich, President, Warner Bros. Pictures Group.

Animation work has been underway since last year at Sola Entertainment (Blade Runner: Black Lotus, Ultraman, Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045) with a full and exciting voice casting to be announced imminent. The film will be released in theaters worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
