As their eighth fully animated film, Illumination and Universal Pictures present The Grinch, based on the beloved Dr. Seuss Christmas classic. The Grinch tells the story of a cynical grouch who decides to steal Christmas but is eventually moved by the generous Christmas spirit of a little girl and changes his mind. Funny, heartwarming and visually stunning, it's a universal story about the spirit of Christmas and the indomitable power of optimism.
Academy Award® nominee Benedict Cumberbatch lends his voice to the infamous Grinch, who lives a lonely life in a cave on Crumpet Mountain, with his faithful dog Max for only company. With a cave full of strange inventions and complicated contraptions that he uses for his daily needs, the Grinch occasionally meets only his neighbors in the village of Who-ville, where he is forced to go when he runs out of food.
Every year at Christmas the Nonsochì interrupt his quiet solitude with their ever more sumptuous, brighter and noisier celebrations. When the Whos declare they will celebrate Christmas three times bigger than the previous year, the Grinch realizes he has only one way to protect the peace and quiet: by stealing Christmas. To do so, he decides that he will dress up as Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, even going so far as to trap an apathetic and misfit reindeer to pull his sleigh.
Meanwhile, down in Who-ville, a feisty little girl and her gang of friends try their best to trap Santa Claus as he makes his rounds to deliver presents on Christmas Eve, just to thank him for helping his mother, an overworked single woman. As Christmas approaches, however, her good-natured plan threatens to collide with the Grinch's more nefarious one. Will Cindy-Lou Who be able to fulfill her dream of finally meeting Santa Claus? And will the Grinch be able to put an end to the Whos' festive uproar once and for all?
