The story of Battle Game in 5 Seconds

Akira Shiroyanagi is a normal student who lives a quiet life who loves games and konpeito (traditional Japanese sugar-based candies). One day, on the way to school, a blindfolded man gets out of a car and attacks him, but with enough planning Akira successfully defeats him. A cat girl named Mion suddenly appears, congratulating him on his momentary victory for an "impossible fight", and shoots a hole through his arm and abdomen, only apparently killing him.

He wakes up unscathed in a richly furnished room full of other people like him, all handcuffed. Mion appears and explains that they have been removed from the national register and instead placed here as experimental test subjects for skills, demonstrating their ability to turn their hand into a cannon. The participants here were chosen entirely at random, but Mion seems to have detailed knowledge of all of them. With handcuffs preventing them from moving too freely and using their skills, participants are led to their rooms for the first program, a one-on-one battle, to discover their skills and rest. Akira is paired during the program with a thug Madoka Kirisaki, who turns a stick into a razor-sharp sword and attacks him. With their match taking place inside a school, Akira lures Kirisaki to a science lab and convinces him that he has already seen his ability, through Mion. By turning his hand into a cannon, Akira forces Kirisaki to surrender. In a flashback, it is revealed that Akira's ability, "Sophist", allows him to have the ability the other person believes he has.

Akira recognizes that the key to her skill lies in creating the perfect conditions and timing for her opponent to ask, imagine and fully believe in a fake skill she has. In her room, a girl named Yūri Amagake dreams of her casually unfortunate past: from accidentally helping someone only to find out he was a stalker, to living in a poor environment where her mother constantly brought in new men, and even to her poor affinity with animals. Yuuri is paired with a pervert named Kiryu Kazuto with the ability to determine a person's condition by their smell. Angry and disgusted by him, she knocks him out with her ability, "Demon God," which allows her to quintuple her physical abilities. Yuuri decides to return home to take care of her new half-sister Riria, who has been abused all her life. As Yuuri finishes his battle, Akira has a nightmare, in which Mion appears in his room and tells him that the energy of their abilities comes from someone's lifespan on Earth. He is then taken to a new room with Yuuri, Kirisaki, a muscular man and a thin businessman, where Mion declares via a loudspeaker how a 5v5 team battle will begin in 2 hours.

The thin businessman, named Satoru Sawatari, proposes to introduce himself and formulate a plan. Reveals his ability to turn a button into a rope, Yuuri and Kirisaki both reveal theirs, and the muscular man, Shin Kumagiri, reveals that his is the ability to become invincible for two seconds, even if he refuses to use anything. which was planted in him without consent. Akira persists in her lie, noting the presence of Kirisaki and the risk behind the revelation of the truth. They arrive in an elegant ring arena, where one member of each team must fight against each other, with the final scores determining a team's victory. Akira is shocked that the game format has not been in line with the expected preparation times, misleading people to reveal crucial information about their abilities to potential future opponents. For the first round, Sawatori confronts a woman named Rin Kashii. Rin asks to give up, but Sawatori decides to throw a fifty coin toss by deciding who will win, only to be killed the moment he tosses the coin. Kumagiri prepares to defeat a young bespectacled girl named Ringo Tatara without hurting her, but she gives up instead, much to Rin's chagrin. Ringo acknowledges that her "Plagiarism" ability allows her to copy a person's ability to 1/10 the strength, and therefore would prove useless against Kumagiri. For the third match, Kirisaki must fight a girl, Saeko Zokumyouin, who can turn marbles into huge wrecking balls. He quickly takes over by unleashing his ability, "Trueblade," which allows him to transform a staff into a sword that can cut anything.
