In addition, its manga and anime adaptations have also appeared in the best-selling charts. British reviewers received a mixed reception towards the anime adaptation. The complex technicality of magic within the series was warmly received, but the exposure was criticized for being cumbersome, unclear and poorly executed.

History

The series is set in a world with an alternate story, where magic exists and has been perfected through modern technology. However, the ability to use magic is determined by genetics which limit the number of existing wizards. After the 20 years of the Third World War which reduced the world population to 3 billion, the world superpowers moved to these four nations: United States of North America (USNA), New Soviet Union, the Great Asian Alliance and Japan. In Japan, the wizarding community is informally ruled by the Ten Clan Masters instead of the government. Due to the limited number of wizards, they are treated like a commodity and are forced to enter schools and professions related to magic. There are nine magical high schools in Japan; each of them specializes in different aspects of magic and is simply indicated by their number.

The story follows Tatsuya shiba, a bodyguard of his sister Miyuki Shiba who is also a candidate to succeed the Yotsuba clan, one of the Ten Clan Masters who rule the magicians of Japan. They enroll in First High School which welcomes its students based on their magical abilities. Miyuki is enrolled in the first course and is considered one of the best students, while Tatsuya is in the second course and is considered inept. However, Tatsuya's unique technical knowledge, fighting skills and magical techniques make people see him as an irregular in the school's standardized rankings.

Characters

Tatsuya Shiba and Miyuki Shiba

Tatsuya Shiba and Miyuki Shiba

Tatsuya and Miyuki are brothers of the same school year and children of Tatsurou Shiba and the late Miya Yotsuba with Tasuya who is 11 months older than Miyuki; their parents had a loveless forced marriage and when the mother died, the father married his mistress, Sayuri Furuha, leaving the brothers to live alone. Maya Yotsuba, their aunt and current leader of the Yotsuba clan, was the reason why Tatsuya was born with the unique magic of decomposing, rebuilding and detonating matter (along with some genetic manipulation). Out of fear of her powers, the leadership of the Yotsuba Clan of that time supported Tatsuya's death, forcing Miya and Maya to take measures to ensure her survival: the first was the creation of Miyuki with genetic improvements in utero, which would act as a seal for Tatsuya power; the second was to magically soften Tatsuya's emotions except for his family love for Miyuki; and the third was to assign Tatsuya as Miyuki's bodyguard to develop her sense of loyalty to him. While on a family vacation in Okinawa, Tatsuya averted an invasion by the Great Asian Alliance and joined the 101st Independent Magic-Equipped Battalion which is led by Major Kazama Harunobu. At some point during his life Tatsuya developed an interest in magical technology engineering and commercialized the revolutionary technology through the family business, Four Leaves Technology, under the pseudonymous identity Taurus Silver. He is voiced by Yuichi Nakamura (Japanese) and Alejandro Saab (English).

Miyuki is considered one of the strongest wizards in the world and is a candidate to succeed her aunt Maya as leader of the Yotsuba clan. Her specialty is freezing magic and her unique magic allows her to freeze a person's consciousness. Additionally, half of her magic casting ability is used to seal Tatsuya's powers. Before the family vacation in Okinawa, Miyuki treated Tatsuya coldly, as did other members of the Yotsuba Clan. She started warming up with him and when Tatsuya saved her life, she dedicated her entire existence to him. It has evolved to the point where he disdains the touch of other males and expresses jealousy of the females around Tatsuya. Genetically different from Tatsuya despite being born of the same parents, Miyuki professes her love to him after their engagement under Maya's orders.

In the polls of Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! , both Tatsuya and Miyuki ranked as the most popular light novel characters. Outside of the franchise, Tatsuya and Miyuki also appear in the video game Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax .
