Lady Lovely - The 1987 animated series

Lady Lovely (Lady Lovely Locks and the Pixietails) is a character made by American Greetings Corporation (authors of Strawberry Shortcake e Teddy bears of the heart) in the mid-80s. The characters were licensed for a toy line from Mattel and for an animated television series produced by DiC Animation City in 1987 and consisting of 20 episodes.

In Italy it was broadcast for the first time in 1988 as part of the children's programs Bim bum bam and Ciao Ciao di Italia 1.

History

Lady Lovely Locks is the princess of the Kingdom of Lovely Locks. She and her friends are aided by the Pixietails in keeping the kingdom safe from its enemies. Among the heroes of the show there are Lady Lovely Locks, Cioccobella (Maiden Fair Hair), Curly (Maiden Curly Crown), Pixietails, Prince Heartheart (Prince Strong Heart), Radiant (Shining Glory), Puppy of silk (Silky Pup) e Silk mane (Silky Mane). The main villains are Neronda (The Duchess Ravenwaves), Lots of hairs (Hairballs) to pet names (Comb Gnomes), the latter of which tends to speak in rhyme. The show was canceled after one season.

The series was produced by the French and Japanese animators of Rainbow Brite and Jem, among other cartoons from the 80s. The music for the series was composed by Shuki Levy and Haim Saban and supervised by Marty Wereski. The original theme song "Lady Lovely Locks" was composed by Shuki Levy and produced by the music department of Saban Productions and performed by Donna De Lory. Hi-Tops released five Lady Lovely Locks videos in the 80s. More recently, videos have reappeared on the market. They re-emerged as part of the “Girls Rule Vol. 1” DVD set which included the following cartoon series: Jem, Rainbow Brite and Lady Lovely Locks. Many of the episodes are also available on a “Biggest DVD Ever” DVD for Lady Lovely Locks. Two episodes were never collected except in the Australian VHS edition.

Characters

Protagonists

Lady Lovely Locks - the main protagonist. She is wearing a pink dress and has blonde hair with streaks that symbolize her royalty in three colors: soft pink (dawn), gold (sun) and lavender (dusk). She is the princess of the Lovely Locks Kingdom as well as her main source of power and life. She is a very loyal, courageous, kind, selfless, polite, resourceful, optimistic, trustworthy and friendly person who always treasures her home.

Cioccobella (Maiden Fair Hair) - a maiden and best friend of Lady Lovely Locks who wears a blue dress and has brown hair gathered in waves. She is a natural beauty, party planner, daydreamer and painter, she is very calm, rational and intelligent, but sometimes she has no sense of direction and gets lost.

Curly (Maiden Curly Crown) - another girl and friend of Lady Lovely Locks who wears a yellow dress and has orange hair pulled back in curls. A fun and imaginative girl with a big heart, she loves to make up stories, do her hair and collect bugs, but she is somewhat impulsive and, despite being quite smart, she gets into trouble sometimes.

Silk mane (Silky Mane) - Lady's faithful royal horse who always understands her thoughts and feelings.

Puppy of silk (Silky Pup) - Lady's carefree, but trouble-prone puppy who has a secret crush on the prince-turned-dog.

Radiant (Shining Glory) - a blind, but very wise and powerful sorcerer and magician, and the beloved mentor of Lady and her friends. He often helps Lady with her magic. He is also said to have adopted the prince after being cursed.

Prince Heartheart (Prince Strong Heart) - originally a human, but was turned into a dog due to a terrible curse. He often visits the castle gardens after being adopted by Radiant (Shining Glory). Sometimes, the opportunity comes for him to go back to being human; however, he sets this aside to help his companions, such as coming to Lady's rescue when she is in danger. He was most likely not seen in his previous appearance.

antagonists

Neronda (The Duchess Raven Waves) - the main antagonist. She is wearing a purple dress and, like Maiden FairHair, has black hair pulled back in waves. She is the mean, jealous, cruel, stubborn, selfish, domineering, cold, negligent and conniving ruler of Tangleland, as well as the main arch enemy of Lady Lovely Locks. The Duchess always plots evil plans to conquer the kingdom of Lovely Locks for herself and she believes that cutting a lock of her rival's hair would.

Lots of hairs (Hairballs) - a former apprentice of Radiant who is now employed by Neronda. Deemed unreliable by good people, he specializes in magic and is very practical when it comes to creating and causing problems. He also acts miserable when he feels defeated; however, this makes him quite sympathetic to his peers.

pet names (Comb Gnomes) - creatures with large ears and hair and wild-looking fur and henchmen of Neronda and accomplices of Lots of hairs (Hairballs). They are very mischievous and mean, but lazy and irresponsible during a plan and get angry when their part of a planned plan fails. They are also bitter enemies of the Pixietails, as they all have magical powers, of which theirs is a lightning strike. Their names were Snags, Dulla and Tanglet. Unlike the Pixietails, these were the only three Comb Gnomes ever seen in the entire series.

The Pixietails

Pixietails are fairy animals, which help Lady Lovely Locks when she needs a problem or someone is in trouble. Lady's Pixietails are rabbit-like creatures, FairHair's Pixietails are squirrel / squirrel-like creatures, and CurlyCrown's Pixietails are bird-like creatures.

Draghi

There are dragons in the kingdom. They can breathe fire and have wings to fly with. Instead of eggs, newborn dragons are born from the dragon tree. A plant called dragon's hair has some connection.

Toys

The Lady Lovely Locks toy line was created by Mattel and manufactured from 1987 to 1989. The toy line consists of character dolls approximately 8,5 inches tall, with some dolls with long, colorful locks. Most of the dolls came with three or four Pixietails (small squirrel-like plastic animals with long silky tails). Pixietails can be worn in the hair of the doll or the child. Further elements in the toy line were other pets and play sets.
