Sokihei MD Geist - The 1986 anime and manga

Sokihei MD Geist (Japanese: 装 鬼 兵 MD ガ イ ス ト, Hepburn: Sokihei MD Gaisuto, literally “Soldier in demonic guise MD Geist”) is an anime and comic series about a post-apocalyptic world.

Geist (the main character) is MD-02, a more dangerous soldier, genetically engineered to function as a killing machine, but each of the MDS units has gone murderously insane. As a result, Geist was put into suspended animation in a stasis pod orbiting planet Jerra until it crashed several years later, awakening it and taking it into another war on the planet.

History

MD Geist I: the most dangerous soldier

The regular army of the planet Jerra has been embroiled in a bloody civil war with the rebel army of the Nexrum, which believes that Earth should not be involved in the government of its extraterrestrial colonies. In response, Jerran's army developed the most dangerous soldiers, which proved too effective; the MDS units attacked everyone, including their allies. One of these soldiers, the MD-02 “Geist”, was ordered to be put into suspended animation aboard a stasis satellite and launched into Jerra's orbit.

After several years, Geist awakens after the stasis satellite crashes on Jerra. In a desolate city, Geist discovers a group of bandits, whose leader kills a stray soldier wearing a power suit. Geist confronts the bandit leader for acquiring the dead soldier's suit. In a fight to the death for the suit, Geist cuts off the leader's arms before piercing his skull with the combat knife. Vaiya, a female bandit, is drawn to Geist's strength, but aside from her knowledge of the activities of both armies, Geist shows no desire for her. The bandits locate a mobile fortress of Jerran being attacked by the forces of the Nexrum and find it as an opportunity to save the fortress at a price. Geist and the bandits form a difficult alliance with the Jerran forces led by Colonel Krutes (Geist's former superior) before participating in a mission to stop the activation of the Jerran "Force of Death" Doomsday weapon. The Death Force countdown began shortly after the assassination of a country president of Jerran. Its aim is to annihilate all life forms on Jerra without discrimination.

As a black knight, Geist equips himself with the acquired power suit (which eventually becomes his trademark) and enters the Brain Palace with Krutes commandos and his team of bandits in tow. Everyone except Geist and Krute are killed during the invasion. Upon reaching Brain Palace, Geist confronts an advanced combat robot activated by Krutes, realizing that the colonel has set him up. While Geist battles the robot, Krutes reaches the control center to deactivate the Death Force. He succeeds, but discovers that the robot he activated failed to kill Geist. Krutes laughs heavily before Geist smashes his skull with his hands. When Vaiya arrives at the control center, he sees Geist unleash Death Force, unleashing an army of machines that consume living matter to replicate, condemning all life on Jerra to death.

MD Geist II: Death Force

Less than a year after Geist activated the Death Force, which decimated most of Jerra's population, he kept busy dismantling the Death Force machines one by one. The remnants of the human population have fled to a remote shelter run by a warlord named Krauser. Krauser is another MDS unit, MD-01, which has technology that hides its mobile fortress from Death Force. When he encounters Geist, an initial confrontation takes place, in which Krauser "defeats" Geist, throwing him off a fortress bridge. Sometime later, Krauser and the Jerran army plan to lure the Death Force machines to an abandoned city and detonate the lethal "Jignitz Bomb" to exterminate them.

Once again, Geist's programming overrides any shred of humanity he may have and leads the Death Force to the Krauser fortress, letting Krauser's commandos be destroyed in the Jignitz Bomb detonation. Although most of the Death Force is also consumed in the blast, a large number of machines fall on Krauser's fortress as Geist confronts Krauser himself. Geist kills Krauser in hand-to-hand combat as the Death Force machines consume most of the refugees. (In the anime Krauser is caught in an explosion and Geist's empty helmet is later shown, so while both are likely killed neither death is definitively confirmed.)

MD Geist: Ground Zero

This comic takes place before the events of the first OAV. On a council of regular army officers, Lt. Leigh Wong attempts to persuade them to use Geist in battle; is a genetically modified soldier created to specialize in strategy and versatility, designed to perform as a lone fighter, rather than within a group. Wong also mentions how Geist strictly follows feasible commands. She is sent to a base with Geist, who has been ordered to work with the team already stationed at the base, much to her frustration. The team, led by Colonel Stanton, dismisses Geist, seeing him as lifeless, who himself is unaffected, and assigns himself to the reserves as ordered by Stanton, much to Wong's chagrin.

Later, Stanton informs his men about the mission they will undertake, in which they must investigate and, if necessary, destroy a collective Nexrum in a temple within a jungle. Wong interrupts the briefing to mention the cyborg units of the Nexrum, in the interest of men who have never heard of them before; his interruption is in the hope that Stanton will use Geist, who is the only soldier with experience against cyborgs. Suddenly, a soldier rushes in to tell them both to get out. Sergeant Robard, a soldier with whom Geist has quarreled, lies writhing on the floor with both arms severed, Wong sees this rather sinister as proof of Geist's efficiency.

The next morning, Stanton and his men are preparing to begin their mission, only to be stopped when Wong and Geist suddenly show up. Once again Stanton refuses to accept Geist, especially after what happened yesterday, keeping him as a reserve without armor. In the jungle, Geist takes care of their encounters effortlessly, eventually reaching the temple to discover a Nexrum ship armed with a large cannon. Geist and the soldiers quickly occupy the base, taking enemy forces prisoner. Wong and Stanton investigate the ship, when suddenly soldiers are ambushed by cyborgs piloting Nexrum machines. Geist is the only one to survive, having jumped onto the ship once it started taking off. On board, Wong uncovers a plan for the Nexrum to fire the ship's cannon at their own city, which is laden with nuclear weapons, and has been ordered from Earth. With no way to stop the ship, Stanton and Geist set out to destroy the engines, but before going further, Stanton makes it clear that Geist is not to tell anyone about Earth's involvement in this plan, even if Geist survives him, he is not to mention it. . The two fight with a machine guarding the engines, eventually Stanton is fatally wounded and his armor coated in oil leaking from the enemy machine. With his vision of Geist finally reevaluated, Stanton delivers one final order, to don his armor and take out the ship's cannon. Geist does this successfully, briefly tangling with the same machine after discovering that its connections are still active, and prepares to hijack its jet section. Geist escapes just in time as a defense unit destroys the reactor circuit controls in the cockpit, destroying part of the ship's thrusters, causing it to crash into the temple. Wong screams when she sees Geist fly past, unable to save her.

The temple rises with a huge explosion and a regular army patrol discovers Geist waiting to be picked up. Before a jury, Geist does not talk about what happened in the mission, recalling Stanton's orders. For this, Colonel Krutes comes to the conclusion, based on evidence, that Geist is somehow responsible for the deaths of the regular army personnel and the failure of the mission. Krutes expresses his desire to execute Geist, but due to President Ryan's input, he must instead be imprisoned in stasis.
