The Real Ghostbusters - The 1986 animated series

The Real Ghostbusters is an American animated television series, a spin-off / sequel to the 1984 comedy film Ghostbusters. The series aired from September 13, 1986 to October 5, 1991 and was produced by Columbia Pictures Television and DIC Enterprises and distributed by Coca-Cola Telecommunications.

The series continues the adventures of the paranormal investigators, Dr. Peter Venkman, Dr. Egon Spengler, Dr. Ray Stantz, Winston Zeddemore, their secretary Janine Melnitz and their ghost mascot Slimer.

“The Real” was added to the title after a dispute with Filmation and its Ghost Busters properties. (See the animated series Ghostbusters)

There were also two Real Ghostbusters comics in progress, one released monthly by NOW Comics in the US and the other released weekly (originally biweekly) by Marvel Comics in the UK. Kenner has produced a line of action figures and playsets based on the cartoon.

History

The series follows the continuing adventures of the four Ghostbusters, their secretary Janine, their accountant Louis and their mascot Slimer, as they chase and capture ghosts, specters, spirits and ghosts around New York City and various other areas of the world.

At the beginning of the fourth season in 1988, the show was renamed Slimer! and the Real Ghostbusters. It aired in a one-hour time slot, which the show started doing under its original name earlier that year, January 30, 1988. In addition to the regular 30-minute Real Ghostbusters episode, a half an hour of Slimer! A sub-series was added that included two to three short animated segments focusing on the character Slimer. The cartoon was managed by Wang Film Productions. By the end of its seven-season programming, 147 episodes were aired, including syndicated episodes and 13 episodes of Slimer !, with more episodes airing out of production order.

Characters

The protagonists are the same as in the film, with partially different features and overalls of different colors.
Peter acquires a more youthful appearance and a light brown jumpsuit with green cuffs.
Egon keeps his glasses but changing their color to red, just as his hair changes from brown and pulled up to a light blonde combed into a pompadour and mouse tail, while his jumpsuit turns blue with pink cuffs.
Ray, on the other hand, has short red hair, with the jumpsuit turning beige with brownish lapels. Winston loses his mustache and his suit turns blue with red cuffs.
In addition to the Ecto-1 car, they are equipped with other vehicles such as the Ecto-2, or customized helicopters, and the Ecto-3, very similar to go-karts.
The green ghost Slimer coexists amicably with the Ghostbusters, it is revealed that Slimer had approached them because he felt lonely, and after helping the Ghostbusters against the ghost versions of them, he was allowed to stay free and live with them, in return. but to be studied.
As in the film it has a huge appetite and smears many objects and clothes with its "slime", often exasperating Peter.
Starting from the fifth series (1989) there is also the character of Louis Tully, a shy accountant played by Rick Moranis in the films. Over the past few seasons, new characters have appeared such as Professor Dweeb, a diabolical scientist and his dog Elizabeth, trying to get rid of poor Slimer, reflecting the change in the title of the series from "The Real Ghostbusters" to "Slimer and the Real Ghostbusters".
