Vandread – The 2000 anime series
Vandread (Japanese: ヴァンドレッド, Hepburn: Vandoreddo) is a Japanese anime television series directed by Takeshi Mori and produced by Gonzo.
The series consists of two seasons, each consisting of 13 episodes; Vandread, which aired from October to December 2000, and Vandread: The Second Stage, which aired from October 2001 to January 2002. The series has also been adapted into a manga and light novel series.
The plot revolves around the all-male Taraak and all-female planets Mejeer, which have been at war with each other for years. During a military presentation by the Taraak Space Forces, their new colonization-built combat ship, the Ikazuchi, is attacked and annexed by female Mejeer pirates; the commander of Taraak's forces, not wanting to lose, prefers to destroy his ship remotely with the intruders on board. A surprising event occurs there. Tatakain's ship and the pirates' ship merge under the impulse of the Praksis crystal, a mysterious energy source, to create a new ship, which is later christened NirVana. The Praksis energy ends up sending the newly formed ship into the depths of space. This fusion also affects the appearance of Mejeer's combat couriers, the Dreads, and a mobile Taraakian "armour", the Vanguard, transforming their appearance and giving the Dreads the ability to combine with the Vanguard, forming Vandread units. Three men, a third class worker and two officers who remained on board and captured by the pirates, will have to, against their will, collaborate and learn to coexist, because their salvation depends on their understanding.
Produced by Gonzo and directed by Takeshi Mori, Vandread ran for 13 episodes on Wowow from October 3 to December 19, 2000. An additional episode, Vandread Integral, was released on December 21, 2001. A second season, Vandread: The Second Stage, was broadcast from October 5, 2001 to January 18, 2002. An additional episode, Vandread Turbulence, was released on October 25, 2002.
