Hänsel and Gretel, older brother and younger sister, are two children, the children of a poor woodcutter who remarried after being widowed. As the man can no longer feed his family, his new wife persuades him to get rid of children, then, with the excuse of getting help in their work, he leads them into the woods and abandons them. Thus, following the trail, they manage to find their way home, but the stepmother does not give up and orders the woodcutter to take Hänsel and Gretel even deeper into the woods. This time the siblings are unable to fill their pockets with pebbles so, once the father has left them, the children get lost. Driven by hunger, wandering through the forest, Hänsel and Gretel until they come to an old woman, she invites them to enter and the children accept with gratitude; Upon awakening, however, her old woman reveals her true nature: she is a terrible witch
