'Captain Fall' – the animated series for adults

In the vast landscape of adult animation, every now and then a series emerges that captures attention for both its intriguing plot and its artistic style. Captain Fall, produced by Netflix Animation, presents itself as one of these gems.

Origins and Development

Captain Fall is a creation of Jon Iver Helgaker and Jonas Torgersen, made specifically for the streaming giant, Netflix. The story revolves around Jonathan Fall, a clumsy and naive sea captain who, without knowing it, finds himself commanding a ship used for smuggling operations. Creative duo Helgaker and Torgersen, along with Joel Trussell, act as executive producers, while Adam Parton supervises the direction.

The project officially kicked off in July 2020, and despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, production continued smoothly. In June 2023, the composition of the cast was announced, also revealing Parton's involvement. The animation of the first season was handled by the talented studio Boulder Media.

Plot and Characters

The premise, as released by Netflix, sees a clumsy and gullible sea captain hired to pilot a luxury cruise ship, becoming the unwitting pawn in a smuggling operation.

At the center of the narrative we find Jason Ritter, who gives voice to Jonathan Fall, a naive but kind-hearted captain who is looked down upon by his parents. Alongside him, a stellar cast: Christopher Meloni, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Anthony Carrigan, Alejandro Edda, Adam DeVine and Trond Fausa. In particular, Adam DeVine plays Tanner Fall, Jonathan's older brother, who, despite being a sailing prodigy compared to his brother, comes across as a narcissist with delusions of grandeur.

Episodes and Release

The first season consists of 20 episodes, divided into two parts of 10 episodes each. The first part was made available to the public on July 28, 2023. Helgaker and Torgersen served as screenwriters, while Parton directed several episodes.

Production

Netflix is expanding its relationship with Jon Iver Helgaker and Jonas Torgersen with a new series of animated comedies, Captain Fall. The show will follow Jonathan Fall, a naive, friendly ship captain who unwittingly finds himself at the helm of a smuggling ship.

Helgaker and Torgersen, creators of the Viking comedy Norwegian (season 3 now streaming on Netflix), are creators, showrunners and executive producers Captain Fall. Joel Trussell will also serve as executive producer.

Netflix has ordered 20 episodes of the series which will be released in two parts.

“We are excited to leave for this new adventure with Netflix. We first launched Captain Fall as a live show, but Netflix saw the potential for it to be animated,” Helgaker and Torgersen commented. “Although it's a little scary at first, going from live action to animation is incredibly limitless and creative on a whole new level. And luckily Netflix has surrounded us with a group of extremely talented people, so everything is in place for us to not screw this up. But you never know. “

Mike Moon, Head of Adult Animation for Netflix, added: “Jon Iver and Jonas have created a hilarious story in Norwegian connected with audiences around the world. We can't wait for fans to see their absurd fantasy genius come to life in their first animated series."
