A regular boy named Dorg finds his life turned upside down when he befriends three different paranormal characters: a cute unicorn, an ancient witch and a creepy ghost. Dorg tries to disguise them as normal teenagers with embarrassing and funny outcomes. This is the clever premise of Dorg Van Dango, the brand new cartoon based on an original idea by Fabian Erlinghäuser (Song of the Sea, Moone Boy) and Nora Twomey ( The Breadwinner, The Secret of Kells) from the acclaimed Irish studio Cartoon Saloon. WildBrain, the Canadian children's content studio, will take over this fall Dog to the new MIPCOM Rendezvous format, for the Cannes hybrid market.

“Beyond the fantastic writing and quality animation, I love the fact that we were able to work on a truly international series, with a creative team spanning Canada and Ireland - Matt Ferguson (series director) and James Brown (producer) in Canada, and Fabian Erlinghauser (creator) and the Cartoon Saloon team in Ireland, ”says Amir Nasrabadi, executive vice president and general manager of WildBrain Studios. "I must also mention the excellent support from partners from Nickelodeon, Family Channel and RTÉ around the world."

The production of Dorg Van Dango

Production on the show began around January 2019 and a 52-episode 11-minute season has been completed to date. Animation, voice recordings, characters and backgrounds were handled by Vancouver's WildBrain Studios, while writing, design, storyboards and post-production were handled by Kilkenny's Cartoon Saloon. Dorg Van Dango it is animated with Toon Boom Harmony software and the backgrounds are painted with Photoshop.

Nasrabadi says the animation style is a really interesting blend of the hand drawn style, which made Cartoon Saloon famous ( Secret of KellsSong of the Sea) and the influence of WildBrain Studios on stop motion animation, "cartoon". “Our characters of Dorg Van Dango they stood out on the scene , because they are treated dimensionally, but they live in a flat and graphic environment “, he explains. “We also incorporated a thin layer of 'cell shadow' to the characters to separate them from the background, which adds to the traditional hand drawing feel we were looking for. Overall, this is one of the most visually unique shows we have made ”.

The distribution of Dorg Van Dango

Dorg Van Dango premiered in March on RTÉ 2 Ireland and in August on Family Channel Canada. It will be launched worldwide starting this autumn on Nickelodeon in the UK, Australia, Scandinavia, France, Italy, Spain, Central Eastern Europe, Poland, Israel, Latin America, Asia (excluding China), India, the Middle East and North Africa. According to Nasrabadi, the audience's reaction to the show was fantastic. “Viewers are drawn to the show's colorful and unique style and stick to the funny and unpredictable storylines and characters. In Canada, Chance Hurstfield, voice of the main character Dorg, won the Leo Award for Best Vocal Performance in Animation. This is truly a unique 2D animated comedy for kids. ”

Furthermore Dog, the WildBrain team, is presenting a large list of content at MIP, including the one just announced Green Hornet, reinvented by famed director, screenwriter and actor Kevin Smith. “We are also excited about the news Johnny Test for Netflix, by creator Scott Fellows, ”adds Nasrabadi. “Both series will be produced by our Vancouver studio.
