Hyou Senki – The animated series of 2000

Hyou Senki (original Japanese title: 機巧奇傳 ヒヲウ戦記 Karakuri kiden Hiwō senki) is an anime series produced by Bones. The series first aired on NHK BS-2 and ran for twenty-six episodes, from October 24, 2000 to May 1, 2001. Created by Shō Aikawa and directed by Tetsurō Amino, the series' character designer and director of the late animation Hiroshi Ōsaka.

The series was later broadcast by the anime television network Animax, which also aired it through its English-language networks in Southeast Asia and South Asia. In Italy, the anime was broadcast for the first time on the Hiro TV channel from March 24 to April 28, 2009.

History

The series is set in the Meiji period of Japan and tells the story of a boy named Hiwou who, like his brothers, belongs to the people of mechanics. Citizens live in poverty, making “Clockwork Dolls” or “karakuri” for festivals, which are ancient wooden mecha toys. Hiwou's father left the family on a long journey and soon their mother also died. The children continued their life together with their village friends.

Their simple life vanishes when the "Wind Gang" appears, destroying the city with their clockwork dolls and capturing its citizens. Hiwō and his brothers and friends, Shishi, Machi, Tetsu, Mayu, Sai and little Jyobu (who are exploring a cave at the time), escape unharmed and embark on a mission to save the city. They bring along Homura, a huge mechanical doll that functions like a giant robot.

Along the way, they are forced to use their clockwork dolls as weapons, which they were never meant to do, according to Hiwō's father. Early in the series, they meet Arashi, a member of the Wind Gang, and Hana and Yuki, two samurai daughters who ended up traveling with the group.

Hiwō and his friends meet a number of historical figures, before these people entered the history books during the Meiji Restoration.
