Maison Ikkoku Last Movie - Final Chapter - The anime film of 1988

Maison Ikkoku Last Movie (め ぞ ん 一刻 完結篇 Maison Ikkoku Kanketsuhen?) Is a 1988 animated film directed by Tomomi Mochizuki. The film, inspired by the manga Maison Ikkoku, created by Rumiko Takahashi, was first published in Italy by Granata Press, and later by Yamato Video.

The film takes place during episode 96 [1], during the night two days before the wedding between Kyoko and Yusaku, and is a new story compared to that of the manga. However, it is interesting to note that in the film there is the character of Nozomu Nikaido, present in the manga, but never introduced in the anime.

History

In Maison Ikkoku, preparations are underway for the upcoming wedding between Yusaku Godai and Kyoko Otonashi, and as usual the neighbors Yotsuya, Akemi, Mrs. Ichinose and Nikaido have gathered to drink and party in Yusaku's room, while Kyoko is unusually late. Neighbors tell the increasingly worried Yusaku that Kyoko was anxiously awaiting a letter that apparently had arrived just that afternoon.

While a thousand doubts begin to assail Yusaku, who is convinced that Kyoko was waiting for the answer of another man, to "save himself" from the marriage with Yusaku, in the Maison Ikkoku the stories of the other characters intertwine. The owner of the Cha Cha Maru would like to ask Akemi to marry him, but she can't find the right moment; Ryoga, the ex-boss of Godai at the local “Cabalet”, is intercepted by Kyoko's father, destroyed by desperate jealousy towards her daughter; the young Ibuki Yagami (now at university) tries a last approach in extremis to the beloved Yusaku; Mitaka and Asuna visit to announce Asuna's pregnancy; Yusaku's old friends at university (when he attended the puppet club) come to the house to stage a show inspired by the young man's misadventures in his room.

At the end of the evening Kyoko returns home, and joins the others; only when dawn approaches does Nikaido remember taking a letter addressed to Kyoko, much to the regret of the tenants (Yotsuya insults him by saying that he has a tiny brain, and accuses him of ruining the marriage). Yusaku finds his fears of him again, but remembers having held out for over 6 years to declare himself to Kyoko; the woman is reading her letter in her bedroom downstairs, and when her future husband joins her she decides to explain the contents of the letter to him. Previously Kyoko had inadvertently tore a photograph of Yusaku as a child, which she had seen in Grandma Yukari's bag; She kyoko had the photograph restored to be able to return it to her grandmother, however the girl could no longer separate from that photo. The letter Kyoko was waiting for was Grandma Yukari's response to that letter, which she recommends that Kyoko take care of her grandson.

As dawn rises, Ibuki sleeps drunk in Akemi's room, Mr. Chisuga and Ryoga are even more drunk in Nikaido's room, Akemi receives the proposal from her boss; Kyoko and Yusaku have to prepare for the formalities of the day before the ceremony, and they approach to kiss, but they are interrupted by the tenants as usual; while Kyoko smiles at her in spite of her, Yusaku is desperate, while Ichinose points out that they will stop the revelry only for the ceremony and then they will start again to the bitter end.

After the barking of the dog Soichiro, the closing theme Garassu no Kissu (Glass Kiss) is accompanied by fragments of the series (redrawn in the style of the film), the last clip of which sees Kyoko reprise the role of Yusaku in the rain only to find the famous photograph.
