"Sulwe" the bestselling book by Lupita Nyong'o becomes a Netflix movie

Netflix has announced a new musical animation film titled sulwe, based on the bestselling book of the same name by the Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong'o, illustrated by Vashti Harrison and published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers. Nyong'o is writing the adaptation for the film.

Sulve's story

Sulwe has midnight skin. She is darker than anyone she knows. All she wants is to be beautiful and shiny. One night, Sulwe receives a visit from a shooting star sent by Night and embarks on a magical journey, in which he learns the enlightening story of the sisters Night and Day. Sulwe is a story about colors, self-esteem and learning that true beauty comes from within.

"Sulwe's story is one that is very close to my heart. Growing up, I was uncomfortable in my dark skin. I have rarely seen anyone who looked like me in the ambitious pages of books and magazines, or even on TV. It has been a long journey for me to come to love for myself “, Nyong'o shared in the announcement. "Sulwe is a mirror for dark-skinned children to see themselves, a window for those who may not be familiar with colorism, to have understanding and empathy, and an invitation for all who feel different and invisible to recognize their innate beauty and value. I am thrilled that the book is being adapted into an animated musical that we hope will inspire children around the world to celebrate their uniqueness. "

Earlier this year, Lupita Nyong'o read sulwe in the context of Bookmarks -- a live action series that features prominent black celebrities and artists reading children's books by black authors, highlighting the black experience. The episode is now available to stream via Netflix and the Netflix Jr. Youtube channel.

sulwe joins Netflix's fast-growing list of original animated films including those nominated for an Oscar Klaus, Kris Pearn's The Willoughbys, Oscar winner Glen Keane's over the moon; as well as the comedy of autumn 2021 Back to the Outback directed by Clare Knight and Harry Cripps, Richard Linklater's Apollo 10 ½: an adventure in the space age, Chris Williams " The beast of the sea, Henry Selick's Wendell & Wild, Nora Twomey's My father's dragon, Guillermo del Toro's Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, Wendy Rogers The magician's elephant, Minkyu Lee's The Witch Boy, a sequel to Aardman Hens on the run and red wall series of films and events.
