Tear off along the edges is an Italian animated series from 2021 written and directed by Zerocalcare for the Netflix streaming platform.

History

The series revolves around a journey that Zerocalcare and his two lifelong friends, Sarah and Secco, have to face. Over the course of the episodes, stories and flashbacks of the protagonist's life follow one another, passing from the middle school years to those of high school, up to the present, narrating his existence through the sarcasm and irony that distinguish the character. During the trip Zerocalcare tries in every way to distract himself from what his conscience (an armadillo with anthropomorphic features that has always accompanied him) wants to remind him: the reason why the three friends are heading by train to the city of Biella .

Characters

Zerocalcare lends his voice to all the characters except Armadillo, voiced by Valerio Mastandrea, and some of the characters from the last episode. The dubbing was done by Rain Frog at Sound Farm 999 studio.

Production

The series is produced by Movimenti Production in collaboration with BAO Publishing, the animation is created by DogHead Animation Studio while the sound design and mix have been entrusted to Massimo Cherubin for Rain Frog. It is the first animated series by the cartoonist Zerocalcare (pseudonym of Michele Rech), made after a long period of experimentation with animation. It was announced on December 21, 2020 with the release of a first teaser trailer. On October 8, 2021, a second teaser was released and the release date was revealed, while the trailer was released on the following October 18.

The first two episodes premiered at the Rome Film Fest on October 18, 2021. The series was released on the Netflix streaming platform on November 17, 2021.

Soundtrack

The original soundtrack is composed by Giancane and is collected in the album Torn along the edges, released in conjunction with the series. Other tracks chosen by Zerocalcare are also the backdrop, including tracks by Tiziano Ferro, Manu Chao, Ron, Jonathan Lloyd & Clif Norrell, M83, Max Brodie, Fauve, Gli Ultimi, Klaxon, Band of Horses, Billy Idol and Generation X. All the other musical inserts have been selected from the Audio Network archive.
