After the critical success of the animated series The Barefoot Bandits (The barefoot bandits), New Zealand animation studio Mukpuddy has announced an animated, children's and family comedy series titled The Adventures of Tumeke Space (The Adventures of Tumeke Space). The show was broadcast on the HeiHei and TVNZ On Demand children's platform on Monday 8 February and was made with funding from NZ On Air / Irirangi Te Motu.

The new series follows aspiring hero Tumeke Space (voiced by Glen-Paul Waru), his trusty JNR-572 robot assistant, aka "Junior" (Josh Thomson), and reluctant ally Wahine Troubles (Kura Forrester) in search of the lost koro of Tumeke - a legendary space hero - as he battled the pink menace, loyal subject of the evil queen and her tyrannical "moral supremacy".

The Adventures of Tumeke Space (The Adventures of Tumeke Space) also features the vocal talents of comic actress Urzila Carlson, Kimberley Crossman, Donna Brookbanks and Alison Quigan in guest roles. The series is produced and directed by Mukpuddy founders Ryan Cooper, Alex Leighton and Tim Evans, who are also showrunners.

As the principals explain, Tumeke Space began her life on a post-it note stuck to Cooper's desk, and the idea was overshadowed in 2014 when The barefoot bandits it was the green light. However, Tumeke found his way Bandits as Tane, Fridge and Riley's favorite TV space hero. In Season XNUMX, the Bandits uncovered a "lost episode" of Tumeke Space, which gave us a closer look at its intergalactic exploits. Now The Adventures of Tumeke Space is finally ready to take off on its own.

But first, the studio had to overcome its own cosmic challenge: just when Mukpuddy finally got the chance to do so. Tumeke Space, New Zealand went under COVID-19 the same week the animation was about to begin. But after a couple of hectic days of preparing the crew for work from home, Tumeke Space was able to start production on the day after the blockade began… And, months later, the animation completed during the second COVID-19 blockade in Auckland.

“As far as I know, we are one of the only shows, if not the only show in New Zealand, to actually start mass production,” Cooper noted. "People don't really understand how different animation is from a live show… and in this case, the differences luckily worked in our favor."

“We are so excited about our crew,” added Leighton. “Working in isolation was a hard adaptation for everyone. The fact that we have been able to move forward is all thanks to them “.

Showrunner / designer and Mukpuddy co-founder Alex Leighton puts the finishing touches while working from home, surrounded by inspiring characters.

Originally formed in 2002, Mukpuddy began life as three animation school graduates - Ryan Cooper, Alex Leighton, and Tim Evans - making web-toons in a Pakuranga basement. Eighteen years later, Mukpuddy has solidified its position as one of New Zealand's most successful animation studios, with a crew of 50 and several titles to their credit, including Quimbo's Quest, Jandal Burn, The Drawing Show e Pipi Ma. This fall, the studio announced it had acquired the rights to adapt Spike Milligan's classic children's book Badjelly the witch.
