Animation generates 50% of Ireland's film and television production spending

The rapid growth of the Irish animation industry continued in 2019 and now accounts for nearly 50% of all production spending in Ireland. New data released by Screen Ireland on projects that received a Section 481 tax relief in 2019 show that there were 39 animation project recipients, worth a total of € 372 million.

"The spending figures for 2019 once again highlight the amazing growth of the animation industry in Ireland over the past five years," said Ronan McCabe, recently appointed CEO of Animation Ireland. “To put these figures into context, in 2014 the animation projects that received the support of Section 481 were valued at 85 million euros, or 20% of the total. In just five years, this has grown by 438%. "

He continued: “The numbers from Screen Ireland show that Ireland is now a major global player in animation production, and this is something we should all be extremely proud of. The creativity, talent and experience we have on this island are extraordinary. We have been saying for years that the Irish animation sector has enormous potential and these numbers support it ”.

Animation Ireland is the trade association for animation studios in Ireland. The animation industry directly employs over 2.000 people, a number that is growing rapidly year after year. Animation Ireland now has 33 member studios, up from 25 in 2018 and just 14 in 2015.
