Trailer: GKIDS shivers with the collection of "On-Gaku: our sound"

GKIDS, the acclaimed producer and distributor of adult and family animation, announced it has acquired the North American distribution rights for the animated film. On-Gaku: our sound by director Kenji Iwaisawa, based on the manga by Hiroyuki Ohashi.

In production for over seven years, On-Gaku: our sound It is made up of over 40.000 frames drawn by hand, using the rotoscopic animation technique. The film won the Nelvana Grand Prix at the Ottawa International Animation Festival 2019 and was selected for the Contrechamp Competition section at the Annecy 2020 International Animation Film Festival.

GKIDS will release the film in 2020.

Synopsis: When you are a bored teenager looking for strong emotions, sometimes the only thing you can turn to is rock and roll. Lacking skills, money, or even a full battery, a feared trio of high school criminals decide they are destined for musical glory in an attempt to impress their only friend Aya, avoid a rival gang, and most importantly, get stuck out.

Encouraged almost entirely by Iwaisawa, and with a starring performance of the Japanese alternative rock legend Shintaro Sakamoto, On-Gaku: our sound brings his sound and vision into the Hiroyuki Ohashi manga from which it was adapted. In perfect expressionless humor, the film features a very original take on the beloved vague comedy - a low-fidelity friend film with a thunderous musical ending that will leave you craving an instant encore.

Rodney Uhler of GKIDS and Emico Kawai of Nikkatsu Corporation negotiated the North American rights agreement.

"On-Gaku: our sound It reminds us of our favorite indie comedies while remaining a totally unique film, "said Uhler, director of special projects at GKIDS." Kenji Iwaisawa's stunning hand-drawn work created a film full of citable lines, distinctive characters and infectious style. It's still one of the funniest viewing experiences we've had all year and we can't wait to share the film with the audience. "
