Annecy presents the selection of 2020 short films for the digital festival

The organizers have confirmed that the Annecy festival - one of the largest annual events on the animation calendar - will take place in a new digital version from 15 to 20 June.

Some programs will be postponed to 2021, such as the 60th anniversary celebrations and territory focused on African animation, but a new selection of some of the best films of the year will be available on the new platform now in development.

Other unique and exclusive contents modeled on the usual programs of the event, of the market (MIFA) and of the meetings are being studied.

Il Festival Cosa Sarà has received over 3.000 films from 94 countries (the most represented are: France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, China and South Korea).

  • Short film competition: 37 films in the Official category and 12 in the Off-Limits category, 20 in the Perspectives section, 10 in the Young Audience section

“Overall, the 2020 selection is less serious and more fun than in previous years. We still find several films dealing with current themes, in particular ecology, migration and gender identity. Some movies - Empty seats by Geoffroy de Crécy, The physics of pain by Theodore Ushev e Something to remember by Niki Lindroth Von Bahr - it even seems to anticipate the current situation ", said Marcel Jean, artistic director of the Festival.

“We are particularly proud of the quality and variety of the Off-Limits selection, which testifies to the vitality of the experimental approaches. In addition, six of the twelve films in this section were directed by women, which represents the level of equity that characterizes the selection in the different categories of short films. We are also enthusiastic about the different countries from which the selected films come, there are works from Iceland, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt and Indonesia, countries that are rarely represented in Annecy.

The Graduation Films revealed a very high level of production from the Lodz school in Poland, where three films from this educational institution were selected. Meanwhile, television programs indicate that this industry is going through a great era with so many daring and ambitious productions targeting a diverse audience. "

The official selections for Feature Films e VRWorks will be announced in mid-May.
