Michael B. Jordan to produce live-action film "Static Shock"

Actor and producer Michael B. Jordan (gen: LOCK, Raising Dion, Creed II) will produce the new film on the comic book adaptation of Static Shock, for Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment. The news was announced during the recent DC FanDome virtual event. Jordan will produce the film through his WB-based Outlier Society.

Oscar nominee Reginald Hudlin (D, The Boondocks, Blazing Samurai) is also producing.

“I'm proud to be part of building a new universe centered around black superheroes; our community deserves it, ”Jordan told The Hollywood Reporter. "Outlier Society is committed to bringing diverse comic content to life across all platforms and we are thrilled to partner with Reggie and Warner Bros on this first step."

The superhero Static Shock was created in 1993 by Milestone Media, a now defunct publisher founded by black writers and comic books distributed via DC, and the character eventually entered the DC Comics universe in 2008. Over the course of FanDome, DC comics announced that he has signed with Reginald Hudlin a digital comic series of Static Shock (to be released in February) and a graphic novel with drawings by Kyle Baker.

An animated series about teenage Virgil Hawkins, who acquires electromagnetic superpowers after being enveloped in a mysterious gas, was created by Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis and Derek Dingle of Milestone and produced by Warner Bros. Animation. Statick Shock  (starring Phil LaMarr) was a hit, praised both for his contribution to portrayal in the superhero genre and for his recognizable characters, bright imagery and commentary on social issues.

The series ran on Kids' WB from 2000 to 2004, earning a Humanity Prize, an Emmy Award for directing and composing during the day (plus other nominations) and an Annie Award nomination for director Dave Chlystek.
