Several characters animate the nominations for the 33rd edition of the GLAAD Media Awards

Today the candidates for the 33rd edition of the GLAAD Media Awards were announced, with RuPaul's Drag Race Season 13 finalist Gottmik reveals the selected categories live via GLAAD's TikTok channel. GLAAD announced 246 nominees in 30 categories for 2022, including two new categories: Best New TV Series and Best Original Graphic Novel / Anthology.

"Media can create positive change, and this year's nominees represent powerful projects, stories and creators who have positively changed culture and enlightened audiences with new and impactful LGBTQ stories," said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. "There are more nominees this year than ever, highlighting a growing landscape of LGBTQ visibility and serving as a reminder of the pivotal role film, television, music, journalism and other forms of media can play in growing LGBTQ acceptance in the face of continued attacks. against our community ".

Key trends in last year's nominated titles include the portrayal of transgender and non-binary characters, particularly in many nominees in video games, comics, and graphic novels; as well as stories about LGBTQ people of color, such as those portrayed in a Danish animated documentary Run away and the Disney Channel animated series The house of the owl e Combat Boots.

“After decades of LGBTQ characters being left out, sidelined, or misrepresented on television, it is incredibly powerful to see how many series have introduced fresh, impactful and fully developed LGBTQ characters and storylines in their first season, many of which were among best-loved shows of the year, "said Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD President and CEO." The introduction of the Outstanding New TV Series category recognizes the shows and creators who achieve LGBTQ inclusion early on and encourages other showrunners to include LGBTQ characters and stories that enlighten and entertain in new projects ".
